Dear AT,
We're moving into a great new apartment (renting) and have fallen in love with the Crate and Barrel Lounge Sofa in this lovely chestnut brown color.
We want to build our new living room around this piece.
We've just sold off all of our previous furniture, so we're starting from scratch!
We'd love to get some readers' ideas on what, besides the sofa, would work in this room both in terms of furniture pieces as well as colors...

A few things to consider:
- We love the sofa, it's 99% non-negotiable.
- We also love the idea of an IKEA PS cabinet or two, in either red or white, for some storage.
- There are a lot of nooks and crannies in this room and not a lot of uninterrupted wall space.
- The wall that can't be seen in either of the two photos is mirrored from about waste-height up.
- We are not too fond of the idea of painting.
- We love television. There. I said it. We'd like to be able to lounge comfortably on our sofa and watch the awesome flat panel screen that comes with the apartment rental.

Basically, we need your readers' help in coming up with the rest of the room!
Thanks! R&D
What a georgous sunny room!
I think either red/red-orange or green would make nice accent colors to tie the brown sofa and the yellow walls together. I'd probably go with green, and get lots of plants to soak up that sun!
(Sorry, no real furniture design advice, I'll leave that to everyone else..)

Is the room large enough for two seating areas? (It looks like it in the photos.) If so, I'd put a small table and two comfy chairs in front of the window so you can enjoy the light and view. That would also help the room feel more balanced: You'll need some visual counterweight for the sofa. Whatever you do, don't get spindly little chairs and side tables.
Since the couch and room are both fairly neutral, you have lots of style options. You could go modern or traditional. I'd start with a Parsons style table or coffee table, which can also go either way. Then make the leap with chairs -- whether to go modern or not.

While the sofa is nice, I'd either rethink the color of the sofa or the color of the room: A Dark Brown sofa in a Yellow room is just an awful color combo. If you don't enjoy painting (taupe? light blue?) there are always professional painters.
And the IKEA PS Cabinets are very "Dorm Room" compared to this sofa - You need to raise your sights a bit higher. The (unshown) mirrored wall needs to come out too.
And what is that big black hole under the TV?
Overall, its difficult to make any further useful suggestions as there just isn't enough info about the apartment in general (Is an eating/work area necesary?) and what your needs/likes are. Perhaps a professional decorator/designer would be more helpful...

It looks like you have an amazing view and lots of light in your space, but the space itself seems rather awkward. The sofa looks like a great piece to design around though...
Is this room the living room or living & dining? What are your requirements from the space? How long do you want to live there?
There is no way to get around the painting I am afraid (c'mon -- it looks like there is barely any wall to paint!!)... The colour depends on what direction you want to take design-wise; you could go with a nicely-balanced white, pale blue or grey.
The flat screen tv looks like it is hung too high for viewing from that sofa (you will be craning your neck up to watch tv), and is too wide for the fireplace (that *is* a fireplace, isn't it?)-- it should be moved somewhere else. Depending on what plans you have for the space (and what the wall looks like), maybe you could put a long low wall unit on the wall not pictured, and hang the tv on top of that (the mirrors have got to go).
The wall with the fireplace is so awkward-looking with all the nooks and crannies, I would be tempted to look into hiring a cabinetmaker to build an integrated shelving unit across the space in order to unify it.
With all the light, you will have to get window shades that filter UV light, or your sofa will be badly damaged and faded within just a couple of years. Something along these lines:

you may need curtains too...

Take a look at the new issue of Domino. There is a article about Julianne Moore and the design job she did for her stylist. I love the color the walls and the curtains, a dusty mauve pink on the walls and yellow curtains/drapes. It looks great.

Hi! Original poster, R&D here. Since our question posted, we've been moving and this is the 1st chance I've had to jump back on here. It's probably too late to generate any further suggestions, but just in case anyone's still reading...
First, thanks so much for the feedback!
The walls are a rather neutral, linen color -- thanks to my trusty low-res camera phone, they look much more yellow in the photos. I love the idea of creating a cozy seating area over by the windows to counter the big sofa. I'm not sure the room is big enough, but we'll definitely consider that when the couch arrives and we get a better sense. Unfortunately we'll have to learn to live with the mirrored wall (as renters, we are deferring to our landlord on a lot of these elements), and we may have to stay with the current paint color as well, and it's not likely we can change the position of the big mammoth TV either. The big black hole underneath the television is a small gas fireplace. It doesn't look like a big black hole in person, I promise :-). All of the above confirms this: the room is beautiful but AWKWARD. I agree with all your comments about the TV, nooks, fireplace, but I'm afraid we are stuck with them!
We will only be using it as a living room with the possibility of adding a small, subtle workspace to it in the future. We'd love to get some more feedback, so thanks for anyone who's still checking and responds!
