NY Good Questions: Light and Airy Furniture for the Nook?

2.21furniture.jpgHello AT,

I live in a *very small* studio apartment, with minimal furniture (bookcase, daybed, desk).

At Christmas, I rearranged to fit a large tree, and realized that I liked the new arrangement - and have more space than I thought.

So I have a nook (approx. 5' x 4') where I'd like to add a work table, or a comfy chair/side table - any thoughts?..

(Note: Include a pic of your problem and your question gets posted first.)

The nook is to the left of this photo - I use the bookcase to separate it from the kitchen.

I would like anything I add to be similarly light and airy - this place feels almost beachy to me (or maybe that's just wishful thinking in the middle of this NYC winter...)

Thanks! Ashley

I would add a Starck ghost chair and ottoman side tables that could be moved up to act as a coffee table

How comfy is the daybed for reading? And what's the budget?

If you were more inclined for a work table, I'd go for the cb2 peekaboo console table. Great size (without being too big) for spreading out.

If more inclined for reading, I would prob. go for something like the Eames molded plywood lounge--comfy yet not too heavy.

Enjoy the space.

Can we have a photo of the nook itself?

Is there a window? If not, I'd start with a mirror or two to help make the space seem bigger.

Work table or comfy chair -- those are very different. Which do you need? It seems that if you don't have a need for a work area, then putting one in for the sake of it is pointless.

What about shelf or low bookcase or narrow cabinet of some kind for storage, topped with a great lamp, and fronted by a comfy chair?

Hey Ashley,

How about keeping it mostly open and free? I also live in a small space and I have an impulse to add stuff to space that opens up. Then I realized how nice it is to have some space to move around.

A simple chair would look nice...vintage...with clean lines. Maybe a vintage office chair that has a mixture of wood and fabric/leather?

Thanks for the ideas everyone - not sure which direction I'm going to go in yet.

Meg - the daybed is great for stretching out on, not so great for sitting on (no back, no arms), so I tend to fall asleep whenever I read... The budget? Not huge.

Deneph - I'll look into the eames chair - thanks

Kimg - can't seem to upload photos anywhere today, but the nook itself is quite small - no extra windows, just a pop-art mirror above (so that I won't see myself while sleeping - I find that disconcerting). I like your idea of narrow storage, though.

Steven - I think I'm with you in keeping it open and free. Any great sources on simple vintage chairs?

Thanks everyone!
