thanks for the great farmers market roundup. have been to many of these, regularly. they're great.

it has been rumoured that the dupont market not only imports food from farther away [not a true local market], but that the prices are higher overall than on, say, the Eastern Market one on Capitol Hill. Anyone know more about this?

I'm just over the river, so I go to the Arlington Courthouse market, but I'm itching to get to that Dupont one sometime.

We're in a unique position to get produce from Md, Va, WVa, and even Pennsylvania, avianmission--or did you mean more further afield?

At the AFM, producers are limited to 125 miles.

Well I live in VA now, so I frequent the Farmer's Markets closer to home, but I used to live in Capitol Hill and LOVED Eastern Market.

What isn't mentioned above is the Eastern Market is the only year-round Farmer's Market (that I'm aware of anyway) in the DC area. It's possible this has changed since the fire in the original historic Market ... does anyone know? Also curious how the rebuilding effort is going ...

Dupont is also open year-round. In the winter it's smaller, but still a good place to get root veggies, cheese, bread, etc.

I belong to a CSA that distributes their produce at the Adams Morgan Farmers Market. They may not be accepting new customers for the CSA right now, but I can't speak highly enough about them! Even though the Adams Morgan farmers market doesn't run all year round, they still distributed to their CSA members year round. I don't know of any other CSAs the operate the way they do-- you put down $300 and that establishes your "account." Each week you go to their website and choose whether to order a small box, a large box, or no box. You can also add in additional produce, bread, butter, etc. if you like. Your account is only debited what you actually order. It's perfect for us DC-area professionals who travel too much to belong to a traditional CSA (where you get must get produce EVERY week throughout the summer)

You forgot to mention 14th and U! It's fairly new, so still on the small side, but it's a wonderful market that I hope will gain a bit more popularity and thus more vendors. Runs Saturdays from 9am-1pm.

why is a DC market round-up post on the New York page? Shouldn't it be on the main page? i don't get this format.

Well, how about a DC page. I get the impression that there are enough of us to warrent it.

I think several of the markets are year round. Arlington is, not sure how many others. There are links to websites for some of the markets on the WPost list I linked to. Winter is certainly less abundant, but it reminds me to try to eat seasonally.
The DC posts have really improved in the last couple weeks--give us a page!

Ok whoa. The Dupont FRESHFARM market is a fantastic, TRUE farmer's market. I go every Sunday and am thrilled each and every week to see all the fresh, LOCAL produce, meat, poultry, and other products available. I work at a place in DC that recovers food and makes it into nutritious meals for the homeless, and we have recently started an initiative to buy as much local produce as we possibly can, as opposed to buying from wholesalers. Ann Yonkers, the founder of the Dupont Market has been a friend of our Kitchen for years, and has always supported us very generously. All of the local farmers we are currently working with also sell their produce at Dupont, so I would encourage you to seek them out and support those who are supporting your community. Sorry for the rant, I was just a little thrown off and upset by the accusations that Dupont was not a "true" farmer's market. It is my very favorite, and one of the main reasons I love living in that neighborhood of DC.
