In our quest to keep our balcony plants alive, we were thrilled to find this article by local landscape and design expert Joel M. Lerner, the president of Environmental Design in Capitol View Park, Md. He recommends the following plants that work well in the DC area because they tend to be resilient, long-living, and good-looking...

- American hophornbeam ( Ostrya virginiana)

- Oriental spruce ( Picea orientalis)

- Iroquois viburnum ( V. dilatatum "Iroquois")

- Goshiki osmanthus ( O. heterophyllus "Goshiki")

- Blanket flower ( Gaillardia x grandiflora "Fanfare")

- Blue Hill salvia ( S. nemorosa "Blauhugel")

- Forget-me-not ( Brunnera macrophylla)

- Golden hops ( Humulus lupulus "Aureus")

Joel M. Lerner explains these DC plant choices in the Washington Post article. Which plants have worked well for you in DC?

Honeysuckle grows like mad in our yard in Alexandria, without any planting or prodding from me. I think it came over from a house a few doors down. The tiger lilies in the yard also grow well. Any plant I bring into the house, however, dies quickly, including bamboo.

I have both Blanket flower and Blue HIll Salvia in my yard in Richmond, VA and I can personally attest to their beauty and resiliancy! Just make sure that you deadhead the Blanket flower in order to keep it blooming all summer long.

For the first time in my life, I'm successfully growing something in a container on my deck! Lantana! It's gorgeous...I was inspired to buy it after seeing it in the landscaping around the Department of Commerce downtown. I've also seen it in some of the Smithsonian gardens. The flower clusters have several colors simultaneously-mine are fuschia, orange, and yellow. I think the name of the lantana was 'Bandana Cherry'; bought it for $3.99 at the Arlington Farmers Market. I live in Arlington, VA and my deck gets full sun all day. Apparently, lantana is a weed, but it's really colorful and seems to be thriving even through our extreme heat.

Shux, I LOVE Lantana and it is great for drought-prone areas. Apparently it grows into huge shrubs in countries like Australia!
