Flower Box Awards: Tina and Martin's DIY Simple Solutions

Reporter: Tina

In Tina's words:

My husband loves to build things. He decided to make this planter box
for the front of our house:
1. to prevent trash from blowing into the front of our home;
2. to conceal the garbage can and recyling bins;
3. and to add some much needed greenery to our front "yard"...

I think this planterbox is lovely, not only because my husband made
it, but because of its simple form and hearty greenery.

Dear Tina,

Your husband is a very handy guy. The trash concealment makes it look as if the shrubbery is growing from the trash! And we love the fact that he used a simple palette to bring some staggered height to the arrangement of pots. These are both good solutions. We have a little gift in the mail to you: a pot from Ecoforms and seed packets from SelectSeeds.com to help make your gardens grow. Enjoy!

Best,

I'm about to have my brother build me some planters from the old fence railing that were used on my deck. (We just installed new railings.) I'm hoping that we can make 2 or more long thin planters that can hold tall ornamental grases or bamboo to provide privacy along the deck.
I'm not likely to plant something in them now just put in some variety of bamboo stalks, then when I sell this house, use them for real. I'll have the same need there.
I'm hoping that some of the ugly paint i'm contantly picking up from Lowe's will spruce them up once completed.

Nice work Martin! Do you think you could give Jae some tips on how to make one so he can make one for me? Can't wait to see your planterbox in person. Great work you two.

Thanks, S! I know Martin would love to share tips with Jae.

Miran - we also thought of incorporating bamboo in our backyard for some added privacy. Would be great to see some pictures for inspiration...
