PlantTherapy: Compost from Vermont Compost Company

Vermont Compost Company headquarters!

"We’re not emptying a garbage can; we’re packing a lunch box for plants."

The Vermont Compost Company makes healthy food for your plants.

They also aren't shy about showing you how they do it, or sharing knowledge. They have breathtaking farm photos here, and also their comprehensive online'Compostopedia' for those who want to dig a little deeper.

2008-06-28vermont3.jpgAlthough they produce and supply to farms, they also package and sell their premium products to retail customers. Whiteflower Farm and the NYBG have them stocked, and also sell online. NYBG seems to have a fuller selection and a discount for members.

The Compost Plus sounds like their most versatile mixture:

"This high nutrient blend of compost plus organic and mineral amendments is intended to be used around plant roots—just put a cup or two in the hole when transplanting. It will help establish balance in new gardens and maintain vigor in older plantings. Also excellent as a water-in topdressing for vegetables, perennials, ornamentals, and potted plants. Comes in a 6 quart bag. "

What I came away with from first looking at their website is how through caring about what they are selling their customers they have taught their network of raw good suppliers to care more about what they also do. They do not see their waste products as waste anymore, but another product to sell. And therefore take more care in what produces the waste. It is a very good cycle.

As people reconsider more and more how their food is grown - and begin growing their own - something like a bag of great compost may become a very welcome gift when visiting. I already know of a number of people who would love to receive this more than any other item to use in the garden.

We live about a mile away from this great company. They provide a fabulous product, and keep thousands of tons of food waste out of the landfills while doing it. Unfortunately Vermont Compost is in danger of being shut down. You can read more about this on their website and here-
