On a recent afternoon I visited with Jeff, the owner of FLORA in SoHo, and the store manager, Saori. Jeff agreed to put together a flowerbox to inspire us in our own projects as the weather gets warmer. Jeff had kept his design a surprise, and I was excited to see the plants he chose; the hyacinths, anemone and crocus bulbs were a great, harmonious combination. The ingredients were already gathered, and the entire project easily went together in under 30 minutes.
The basic ingredients for Jeffs flowerbox are:
2 pots of crocus bulbs
1 pot of anemone
2 pots of grape hyacinth
3 pots of Irish moss
2 pots ivy
1 flat of moss
1 sturdy container
plastic sheet/liner
The beauty of this flowerbox is that it is filled with variety of shape, form, and richness of color. From the small leaf spikes and yellow centers on the crocus to the tiny, bell-like blossoms on the hyacinths, it is a delicate grouping of plants that looks gorgeous indoors.
Until the weather stabilizes in May, it would look wonderful inside on your coffee table or near a window, and the plastic lining stops water from being a danger to your indoor surfaces.
For this arrangement Jeff suggests a good amount of sunlight and watering about three times per week. Once the crocus and hyacinth bulbs have expired, they can be taken out and planted outside in October. The ivy and moss will last for a long time, making a beautiful foundation for other plants that you choose to plant in the flowerbox as the seasons change.
Thanks, FLORA!

Sooooo beautiful and he makes it looks so easy! Would enjoy a future segment on indoor window gardening. Thanks for including a gardening feature.
The picture of the purple flowers with the greenery makes me want to paint a room purple and green!!
Wow, that really says, "Spring!" I may have to send my mom some flowers...

thank you for posting about the flowers, it's very inspirational and he really makes it look so easy. i agree with louise above... would love some future insight on indoor gardening especially when caring for bulbs.
sundays are rough when it comes to thinking about monday...this slideshow transported me on this gloomy afternoon- and as I look out the window at all the raking your very own scavenger did yesterday I see my own crocuses in bloom and the daffodils just a little taller...thanks for such an inspirational flowerbox - and the flower shop owners seem so content too!
Happy Monday! Glad you all liked the flowerbox. I find that the toughest part about projects like this is coming up with the plan. Watching someone put it together so effortlessly gave me the confidence to think about starting my own projects. Using moss as a bedliner and lining the entire box in plastic were great tips that can be applied to any flowerbox. In the weeks to come I hope we can get a few more visits in with others about spring planting. Stay tuned!
Hey Matt,
Love the flower box! How much did Jeff charge for this? Will FLORA make it for anyone who walks in and requets it? While I love the box I don't have the time to make it myself and would love to buy it.
Thanks.
CoolFlowerBox,
You should e-mail them or call. They are very friendly and don't mind unquiries. I am sure they would make you one, but do not know their price. This very arrangement is sitting in their shop, so if you run quickly you might be able to take it right home! Their e-mail is flora at florany dot com and you can check their website for telephone number and hours. Cheers!
Sorry - I meant to type 'inquiries'
