It's always fun to see new and surprising things that come up at the local florists in NYC. It can look like a couture runway sometimes. This newer variety of ranunculus was at Plaza Florist on Lexington the other week. It's bold. It's colorful. It's also $7.50 per stem (one blossom per stem - that's over $90 for a dozen - yikes!). I wondered if it was new and cool enough for you to buy it if it showed up at your own local florist.

Cheap chic on your own: hollow out the centers of roses and glue in some chartreuse mums. Voila!

They're gorgeous, but how big are they?

What are these called? I want to get some.

It kinda looks like something I might have made from crepe paper as a child.

I cannot stand ranunculus. Always looks like shoving a bowl of lettuce on your table as some trendy decoration when it's simply an ugly, overpriced weed.

I'm thinking you spend more on your saturday bouquet than I do.

I have to agree with Jaie.

stunning! Maybe wouldn't fork out the money for a dozen but one or two would make a nice accent.

there's certainly a wow factor. But I'm not sure that $7.50 a stem is that outrageous in New York and on Lexington Avenue.

That's why I have a camera, so I can keep everything I see without paying for it. :-))

That looks like it came from Dr. Seuss's garden.

Ooo, those would be nifty in a garden.

This is like a bouquet from Mars. Kind of cool, though. With the right surroundings, they would really pop.

Aroudn here Hydrangea are about $7 a pop, this is much cooler. Perhaps not as large, but way more WOW factor.

Wow! Are these real? If they are, one or two might be good as a accent statement once in a while...but won't use them as a regular 'flower bunch in the vase on the dining table'...

Perhaps at Christmas but even then I'd favor all greens over this.

They're amazing, but I don't think you need a whole dozen to get the look.

These were about the size of a small rose, if that can give you an idea of scale. Hey Charlotte, that is EXACTLY why I started taking pictures. I am a real flower addict. The pics are a cheaper source of enjoyment! I have to say that I agree with just one or two making a statement - just one packs a punch if you like them.
I also saw a few other versions of this the other week at the flower district, with more subtle colors. I think part of the cost on newer/rare cut flowers can be attributed to either difficulty in growing or the investment to create these hybrids. It's possible that if they become popular and/or are easier to grow they will find their way to more venues at a lower price...

Stylish, and unusual, and appeals to teh sci-fi geek within me!
I'm more "shabby chic" than minimalist, but I can SO see those working well in some of my friend's homes, and that's not a LOT of money for a real statement like these.
Esp if you did something really clever like photographed the bunch in situ, and had the photo in the same spot or something, which I know won't read as good as how I'm seeing it! LOL

The other day bright red ranunculus were $2. a stem in the flower district and Fischer and Page. - Quite lovely . . . .

I love regular ranunculus, it goes so well with roses and peonies to make a bold bouquet full of volume. These look weird.
