These are 'Madison' resin planters, and they have a very pleasant soft, sanded look. They are double-walled and can handle the weight of the soil, water and whatever plant would go into them. Their extremely light weight also keeps them manageable (especially compared to other materials at this weight and thickness) once they are full. And they are very durable.
The photo above was from the New York Botanical Garden's shop, and they are available through their online shop.
Simply Planters is another online resource that has more and better photos as well as complete dimensions:

Any rectangular planters? CB2 has affordable ones but the color isn't what I'm looking for.
DWR has nice planters but they're entirely unaffordable (for me).

SeanG,
I agree, these can get expensive. Conran has rectangular polyresin planters. But again, expensive. And they don't seem to have sizes on their website! And not sure of the quality. The Madison ones were very nice, and after seeing them in person I know I would be happy using them.
Jamali is another place to look. They have polyresin rectangular planters, and the prices are not too bad. I like visiting and seeing what they have at the actual store.

Ive been searching for large lightweight planters...what I really want is the Gratia Orb Planter, but $750 is a little ridiculous. Simply planters is great, and for large planters, I found some great resources by googling "commercial planters." THe maanufacturer of some nice, modern, resin planters, widely sold, is Crescent. (Their "Orinoco Bowl" is awesome).

I have some planters similar to the first ones posted (I think they are the same company, but they just come in different colors--black, copper, and gray). I got them at Sprout Home in Brooklyn and I really like them! They are lightweight so they are easy to bring up to my roof garden but they are also very attractive.
I highly recommend them!

SeanG.:
These Fiberglass planters are about half the price of DWR, and available in sizes from large to "what, is this a planter for an International Airport's landing strip?":

Matt, you'll like the latter link, with a description of:
"About this list
With the glut of stunning outdoor furniture, gazebos, tea houses, rockers, loungers -even outdoor showers and tvs, there's hardly any reason to be indoors -unless of course, you're shopping for those items online... "

DeepStream Designs makes a wide range of light weight modern rectangular and square planters in a variety of materials including tropical hardwood, 3 Form resin panels, and any kind of stone including marble.
A large real marble planter weighs less than 60 pounds. DeepStream provides custom sizes and since the planters are modular, they are easy to get in elevators or up stairs to a roof terrace or condo balcony. There are even accessories like stainless steel mesh trellises for privacy.
The separate high impact liners mean that even in hot sunny locations the roots don't bake and they use less water. Self watering reservoir liners are optional. The liners also have drainage systems making them perfect for indoor and outdoor use, or for condo balconies with tough covenants.
While the initial cost of these planters is not negligible, the lifetime costs are low as they are engineered to last for decades. They are made of all recyclable materials and the company even plants 50 trees in Brazil for every planter sold.
DeepStream sells primarily to Landscape Architects but prices are based on volume and can be bought on the web: DeepStream Designs

If anyone is still looking for modern metal planters, I have 2 similar to the ones at the bottom of this page:
http://www.plantcontainers.com/w-031.php#size
They are the same ones sold at Conrans' under the 59th St. bridge in Manhattan.
One is a med-large rectangle, the other is a large cylinder. I'm selling the rectangle for $65, the cylinder for $85. Both are in new condition. I've moved into a small apt. in Manhattan, and can't use them.
