PlantTherapy: Leaf-Peeping

Beautiful fall maple by Zeb Andrews on Flickr

What is your favorite place to see fall foliage?
I know, it's almost like summer out there - but the leaves are still going ahead with their original game plan. The NY Times just posted this slideshow along with an article for options that are more affordable and less crowded than the very popular spots that everyone flocks to at this time. For me, though, Cold Spring on Hudson is my compromise...

It has its share of visitors, but the scenery is beautiful and it is a quick ride from the city on Metro North. One can easily go up and back in a day. And the fall colors from the train looking across the water are beautiful - everything is just beginning to change over now. The hiking trails that are near town have beautiful views and a quick stop in at Hudson Valley Outfitters will get you prepared with trail directions. And the Foundry Cafe had the best cup of coffee in town.

Good luck for anyone heading out this weekend in search of beautiful scenery and a bit of peace from the bustle of everyday city life.

I will never forget hiking on a carpet of golden leaves one long ago October in the Adirondaks. Locally, I love how autumn transforms the Japanese Garden in Portland.
