PlantTherapy: Martha Stewart Living on Chrysanthemums

In the October issue Martha has wasted no time in setting us up for fall with an article singing the praises of chrysanthemums. You can hardly compare the potted mums showing up at the delis and supermarkets to the exquisite varieties served up in the photo above. Those that may be burnt out on the 'hardy mums' (which really are not that hardy up here in the Northeast) will enjoy looking at this article for a fresh look at some truly regal chrysanthemum varieties...

My favorite photo in the article was of the mums being paired with lotus and poppy pods and acorns (left).

Two years ago I posted on the variety of chrysanthemums found at the local Madison Avenue florist.

At that time I was shown beautiful varieties that were worlds away from the potted mums, but even still I did not see varieties in the silky pink and lime greens that are in this article. My favorite has to be the green spider mum.

This fall the New York Botanical Garden will also be featuring chrysanthemums in the Japanese tradition. The exhibit, Kiku, will open October 20th and feature styles that have developed through Japan's 1500 years of cultivating chrysanthemums. The NYBG is calling this its most elaborate exhibition in all of its 116 years, so expectations are high.

Will I be running there with my camera? You bet! Especially after this mum appetizer served up on the pages of Martha Stewart, I am excited to see more of what exists in this plant family and view the meticulous ways in which the Japanese have cultivated them. But the exhibit is as fleeting as blossoms - it is open for just one month.
