PlantTherapy: Rob Plattel's Modern Floral Sculptures

2008-01-18-Temporary Beauty.jpg

This past week ATLA asked if dying flowers could be beautiful. It made me think of an artist's work I recently stumbled upon. Rob Plattel is a modern floral artist from the Netherlands, and his work is like nothing you might see at your local florist. On his website, which only gives you a tiny glimpse of his work, he has a series of photos that celebrate temporary beauty...

Plattel enjoys working with 'natural materials that have a pronounced form and character', so it is no surprise that he can focus in on the beautiful colors and textures that emerge as a flower fades away. Speaking from a practical standpoint, the flowers above would be a mess on anyone's countertop. But they are exquisite in the photos.

You can visit his website HERE. His wood rings reminded me of Andy Goldsworthy, and the site overall left me wanting to see more of his floral designs. He also has recently published a book, Natural Rhythms. No reviews on Amazon, and they only have 2 copies left in stock. If anyone has had a chance to glance at it let us know if it's worth the purchase price.

You could plan a room's entire color palette around one of those photos.

Gorgeous! I love both types of his work -- almost opposite extremes of chaos and order.
