The Photomat awning is now gone, kraft paper has gone up.
It's always interesting to see what previous inhabitants have left behind, for better or worse. While not an apartment, RS & Q's new space in Clinton Hill has also had it's share of discoveries. Take a look behind the paper for a tiny peek at these finds after the jump.
In Kerry's words:
1. The tile floor original to the ice cream shop that once occupied the space in the 30's/40's2. The original tin ceiling painted out white as we found it - leaving it in tact with a few minor repairs in spots
3. & 4. taking down the slat wall we uncovered super old wall paper in several spots here are a few picks - we are leaving it in tact behind the new wall surfacing.
5. some of the old wall paper uncovered includes ancient anaglypta wall coverings - how coincidental, we were spot on with the historical vibe! I saved a few scraps but it is mostly deteriorated and crumbling off...
The fact that some of these elements will be allowed to breathe through is a great way to make the space take on its own character. The initial space needed a lot of work, and these little photos in my box were a real tease. We're really looking forward to seeing how the final space comes together. Good look, guys!

It's a flower shop going in on Clinton Hill. For the past few years I've been photographing flower shops that I find in the city, and I am mostly used to flower shops closing down. It's a nice change to celebrate one opening up.
Flower shops really give a neighborhood some character and color - and the original Root Stock location is a great little shop. When they described the new location and what they were up to, it did remind me much of what some apartment owners go through when they move in. And this space has a bit of history, which they are discovering and enjoying.
I think it will be great fun in a few weeks to see what becomes of the space - and see how much cheer the new shop brings to their block in Clinton Hill.

they should remove the old wallpaper and frame it. that would be lovely! better that than just cover it back up with the new wall, never to be seen again for years, if ever.
