Right now tulips are making their way to every deli and flower shop. And, weather permitting, they are also showing up at the Greenmarket as well! This past week I fell for flaming parrot tulips with long, long stems. This was the view by my bed every morning. I just gave them a fresh cut, put them in the vase, and let them wander. Each blossom had so much character, every photo like taking a portrait...

Blossoms at night, two photos above, before they fully opened.

The remaining shots above were shot in the early morning, what I see when my eyes open.
Because of their long stems, these tulip blossoms almost seemed like heads to a nest of exotic birds. And, coincidentally, I was told that the term 'parrot tulip' came about because the serrated petals have the shape of parrot beaks. The stems continued to gently wind and move as the week progressed. They also aged beautifully, becoming a soft crimson and vanilla on their last day.
A little tulip care: Cut off leaves that will be below the water line and remember to change water daily if possible. Tulips drink a lot of water, and can even continue to grow when in the vase, up to 2" in some cases, so check that water level. These love being in a cool place - keep away from drafts, direct sun and heaters.
Having flowers near the bed has become a regular pleasure. They start the day on a pleasant note, or provide a welcome distraction at the end of a busy day before lights out.
The tansu in the first photo was an old purchase. It is made of paulownia wood and too delicate for everyday use, but it dutifully supports our flowers. The vase is the Pinch Vase, by Jonathan Adler. It's about 8" high (about the average length of most cut tulip stems), so that gives you an idea of just how long those tulips were!

So beautiful. There is nothing like them. No wonder they inspired a mania.

This is why tulips are my favorite flower. Awesome pics. Another neat trick is to take a pic of them a few times a day for a few days and make a little movie. It is amazing how much they move around.

Love, love your tansu cabinet! I would love a step cabinet but they cost a fortune.
Maybe I should put flowers by me bedside table too. I have plenty orchids which I have been neglecting lately. Thank you for sharing your lovely photos.
