~This week is a variety of tulip named 'Leo' - watch these lime green buds roar open after the jump~

This is a great month for tulips, and I am enjoying them all while I can. This week's flowers were a total shocker. They were a lucky find in the plant district, something hard to get even when they are available. Are they named for their ferocity and jagged edges? For their mane-like appearance? No idea. But they are a Dutch import, and on that day the bundles were disappearing quickly.

When the buds were closed, the red peeking out along the green edges created these beautiful brushstroke outlines. And somewhere in the third day, the green outsides had turned to a cool yellow, which in turn changed to a beautiful pastel orange as the inside red shone through.

These have elegant, long stems and relatively compact buds, but once opened they are one of the most attention-grabbing, high impact flowers I have ever seen.

OH. Just gorgeous. If the tulip weren't already my favorite flower this would've pushed it into first place.

A stunning variety. A perfect tulip for an early spring hit of color.

Thanks for the beautiful eye candy. They remind me of lace leaf maple leaves.
