PlantTherapy: Saturday Morning Flowers

2008-07-19SMF1.jpg

Still with very limited e-mail access, but wanted to quickly share this nice surprise that showed up at a local deli. I grew up not liking marigolds, but these were a really nice orange color and very full, not the onese I grew up buying in packs at the greenhouse! And for $5 for a bunch it's hard not to give them a try.

Anyone a big fan of these flowers? Opposed? When I saw these I immediately was reminded of an arrangement idea that was in a magazine not that long ago...

We're sending a shout-out to all of you who bring home flowers to brighten up your home. Do YOU have some Sat. morning flowers to share? Let me know! You can drop a line with a small description and some pics at matt at apartment therapy dot com

It was David Stark's technique from the NY Mag 2008 flower guide and carnations were used to make a bed of color at the lip level of the vase. I think for big fans of orange these might be a fun substitute for that technique. Stuff these in tightly and then have a few taller flowers (like the Gerberas he used) stuck in for height.

I hated these growing up too, along with carnations and forsythia picked from the side of the road. It's taken quite a while but they have all won me over.

Beautiful bold colors. I really do love the photos.

I used to dislike them and aren't fond of their scent. However since buying a house with a larger garden than I have time for, I've come to love them. They're pretty much maintenance free and drought tolerant, they hold up very well in our DC-area humidity even when I forget to water them. I've also noticed that when I plant them in containers around the patio they seem to help with mosquitos (maybe they don't like the scent either).

Love the marigolds, I even like the smell, I know I'm a strange person, they have come a long way since there was just two or three varieties to choose from. Love the colours, orange is my fave' at the moment, that could change in a heartbeat.

I am in the process of trashing out my apartment, as a prelude to organizing and simplifying my space, and the last thing on my mind was flowers. But I logged on while having a cup of coffee and saw the marigolds, and am going out right this minute to get some flowers to stir up my chi.

Thanks!

I too love the smell of marigolds. So why do I never plant them? I guess because I'm not big on annuals. Always seems like a waste to me. But "Marry Golds" (love the sign) grow so easily from seed. I think I will plant some next year.

Today I cut one stem of Queen Anne's Lace with a huge and beautiful bloom. I stuck it, solo, in an old milk bottle. Sounds corny, I know, but it's such a pleasure to look at.

I always plant marigolds with my tomato plants. And Queen Anne's lace is one my favorite flowers.

Hated them in the flowerbed as a child.

Was in rural Mexico a few years ago in late October and everywhere saw fields of marigolds being cut, and the flowers being sold by the side of the road. Turns out the were being used to decorate graves for Day of the Dead.

Marigolds--yum! A very pretty way to dress up a salad and easy to grow!

I love Marigolds- but usually I like to have tulips or gladiolus (our gladiolus didn't pop up this summer!!) in my house :)

I LOVE marigolds. I grew up loving the ones in our yard and garden and have always loved, loved the fragrance. I'm quite startled that anyone doesn't like them.

And the colors are so cheerful. They're such a simple, easy to grow flower and good for protecting other plants against bugs.
