PlantTherapy: Wild Callas with Inspiring Color

2007Sept DuvaDuva.jpg

Duva consists of a wild-eyed Bearded Man selling flowers out of the back of a van at the Union Square Greenmarket. Among his other flowers he had these incredible, speckled and veined calla lilies full of color like smears of oil paints fresh out of the tube.

$9 and a trip on the F Train later, this is what I had for the table...

These calla lilies are a summer variety that do not grow with especially long stems, something the Bearded Man explained between downing whole cloves of garlic and heartily eating a tomato like it was an apple. I love this guy. These flowers have an unapologetic way of existing, with their speckles, bumps and unexpected flashes of brilliant color.

They were put into a small vase that allowed the three stems to collect at the corner and they became a beautiful table accent. A little more color inspiration for the month ahead!

I am not sure how one would track that vase down...the bottom says SPLAT made in the U.K. If my friend can tell me where he purchased the vase I will absolutely post the information back to this page. It is a great, compact size. I think many people would find it a manageable size to keep flowers in it on a regular basis.
