This is a tough one. Please send in your comments and answers below...
Living in NYC or other cities, often there's not enough room in tiny apts. for both a coffee table and a dining/work table. I have searched the city and can't find anyone besides Maurice Villency, that has coffee tables whose heights adjust to dining/work level. Ironically, those who can afford Maurice Villency probably have no need to save space. Have you seen anything like this out there at the Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn coffee table price range?

I saw an adjustable height coffee table at Basic, a furniture store on 7th avenue in the teens (18th? 19th?) can't remember the exact location right now. It was a while ago, and I can't remember the price, but I did buy a reasonably priced diner table there at the time.
I did a quick search for a website, but couldn't find one.
If you don't mind IKEA, check out the LAMBORN for $79. Looks to be what you're looking for (albeit only in white and metal):
http://www.ikea-usa.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&productId=10454&langId=-1&parentCats=10117*10311
We use an Eames elliptical table as our coffee table and dining table. It seats 8 comfortably.
It depends on what kind of friends you have, but our friends don't mind sitting on the floor on nice pillows (Jonathan Adler makes great big comfy cushions). With a cost of approximately $550 it is not a steal but it is reasonable considering its multiple use and design pedigree.

Just to follow up - I finally found the website for the store I mentioned before:
http://www.basicsfurniture.com/
It's generally not a good idea to do a google search for "basic furniture store". I think the store has a wider variety of stuff in house than they do on their site, but it's probably worth a look.
Crate & Barrel has a brand new adjustable height side table... the Cycle Adjustable Table:
http://www.crateandbarrel.com/itemgroups/4565_0.asp?query=side%20table&DIMID=&Page=4&fromLocation=Search
and DWR.com has the bar-height Brio Table:
http://www.dwr.com/productdetail.cfm?id=2819&fp=subc
Neither make the jump to coffee table, but both are interesting, flexible options...at two ends of the pricing spectrum.
This might be a useful link: http://www.ebcoproducts.com/pedestel.html
For a great table that you can raise and lower and also extend with a leaf, check out Calligaris's "Eleven" glass table, which is listed under the "Expandible" section in "Tables" on the site. It's similar to Ligne Roset's Yo-Yo table, but cheaper. You can also refer to the site to find dealers near you.
yep, i too feel your pain of wanting the crescendo by ligne-roset (or actually, the crescendo with the legs from the yo-yo, but I digress...) while looking for cheaper alternatives. here's one from homefrenzy, though still not quite right. http://www.homefrenzy.com/s/Tables5.asp
I also knew of an interior designer who created his own solution by applying a stone top to the reconditioned base of an old barber's chair, which he had replated. A great design which had a lot in common with the Hydra.
Just in from IKEA...
the Funka Coffee Table.
While a little "kindergarten classroom" in its look/materials, it is an interesting, adaptable possibility. Rectangular in shape, birch veneer and silver metal base, it raises from coffee table height of 16-7/8" to 24". Which doesn't exactly take it to dining height, but does add to its flexibility.
I have been searching for the same thing. The best solution, for the price, I have found is the Mascotte Table. It's manufactured by Calligaris, but the following link is the best price I have found: http://www.ladiff.com/liv_tab_mascotte.htm
Also check out Marshall Fields most recent catalog, there is the same type of table on the cover.
Dania is a furniture store here in Seattle -- modern style, a little more high end than Ikea but definitely not expensive -- and they make a copy of the Crescendo table by Ligne Roset. Not quite the same quality but it is only about five or six hundred dollars. It is a new piece and not on their website but I just saw it in their showroom downtown. I'm sure it could be ordered. It only comes with a dark stained wood top.
I found a company that offers a couple of versions of these tables. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get anyone to return a call or e-mail. Give it a try though because they have a few nice ones that don't look like adjustable tables.
www.europeanconnection.net
Here is the link to the table I posted about previously. It's a knock-off of the Ligne Roset Crescendo table and it costs $599.
http://www.daniafurniture.com/?page=shop/flypage&page_back=shop/category_items&offset=0&product_id=1193&category_id=cc5234d8361ae7065695ec0ec16b2eb6
Brayton International makes a "Migrations" table--round shape only that adjusts from coffee table height to 30".
Straight from the Crate sells a nice one - about $800 - only available in stores. Adjustable from coffee to dining table height, all wood, with an extendable top (swivels and opens to double the size).
By the way, I bought the table I mentioned above, and it's just perfect. It adjusts to about 6 different heights, and is the perfect size for a mult-course, multi-plate dinner for two when closed, and easily fits 6 when opened.
My parents have one they got about 15 years ago from the Orvis catalog - round, wood, very comfortably seats at least 4 but now that I would like one I don't see it at Orvis. I know this isn't very helpful. Sorry
I've been looking for the right table for over a year. The ideal table would combine storage space with a lift top that moves closer to the sofa for working and eating. I have a design in mind but am astonished that nobosy seems to be making it (given the small apartments we NYC dwellers live in)
The Hydra table is very slick indeed, but a dining sized version will set you back couple thousand or more dollars. My search for a table that would go from dining to standing height led me to this offering from the medical products industry:
http://www.wisdomking.com/product87885c210080.html
It is extremely similar to the Hydra, and at $874 it's an absolute steal. It's melamine top is 48" in diameter, or get in in butcher block for an upcharge. A rectangular version is also available:
http://www.wisdomking.com/product17464c210080.html
I opted for the 48" round melamine, which I will later swap out for granite.
For a base that will span from coffee table to dining height, try this base with a range of 18"-28":

I just found out from a wholesaler who deals with the manufacturer in Italy that the Esprit table sold by Dania on the West coast is available now from a company in Brooklyn called "euro comfort furniture" on coney island avenue. It isn't on their web site but supposedly they can order it. I already have one (amazing love it), so I didn't call to find out the price, but I figured I'd pass it on since I love my table.
You can also get it from a Dania sister store in Chicago for about $600 and get it shipped to NYC for about $200

Hi, I'm looking for this as well, and I'm having better luck searching under "lift top" coffee tables, instead of adjustable height tables. Lots of hits on google.
I've been looking for a coffee/dining table for nearly a year... and still I can't find a design to meet my needs.
So, thanks to all of you for the links, they'll be a great source of info.
I'm now designing my own, and as soon as it's done, I'll let you know on here.
I'll also make sure, it's at a 'high-street retail price'.
Only one problem, I'm in England so I'll get a load shipped over to the states for you lot.
For expandable tables and spase saving furniture check this WWW.NEOINTERIORS.COM
I found this interesting.
www.gatelys.com/jump.jsp?itemID=4233&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C9%2C133%2C135&iProductID=4233
I found this interesting from Adesso, Jazz Adjustable Glass Table
www.gatelys.com/jump.jsp?itemID=4233&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C9%2C133%2C135&iProductID=4233
For the lift-top table, Ligne Roset's Bolo table is cool. But again, expensive. I do have the Esprit table from Dania and it works really well. Derek would like it since it is kind of the Yo-Yo's base with the Crescendo's table top. A steal at $700, considering Ligne Roset's prices!
Hi all,
I am am on teh same quest for a nice, clean, modern, lift-top coffee/occasional table. Oh, and affordable as well.
Most of what people have lifted are adjustable height tables, which isn't really what I want. Like the original poster, I want one that not only lifts, but comes closer to sofa.
The closest I've found, but is still a little pricey for me, is:
http://www.furnitureshoppers.com/container-table.html
Any help would be appreciated!!
Ron
Thanks for the great info here! I thought I was alone in my quest for a sensible, functional table. Glad I stumbled across your posts in my quest.
This is a very inexpensive table, made for RVs, the will go from cocktail/coffee height to dining, with 5 height settings, for computer, etc. The style is not my cup of tea, but if you can live with it, it's a steal.

There is also this slightly less expensive version of the hydra table that is to my mind better looking..

Visit http://www3.shopping.com/xGS-Lift_Top_Table~NS-1~linkin_id-3055985~r-1~CLT-INTR for a list of wooden lift top tables... They are coffee tables with tops the can be pulled up and towards the couch.
HTH!
What we are all looking for is a fold-out table tob such as that found on yachts on an adjustable base. The closest think I have found for a top is:
http://www.thaiteakmarine.com/catalog/page53.htm
The nifty table I found is:
http://www.teaktropical.com/teak%20tables.htm
Neither are "cheap". Nothing perfect yet.
This is it!! I found what I am looking for, and it only cost $20!!!!
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&langId=-1&productId=42269
My local Ikea didn't have the top, but they did have the base with the top mounting hardware and the base that folds up and towards the couch, when it struck me: It's the mechanism I want, and I don't particularly care for the Ikea top: why not use the coffee table top I already have (and like very much) and put it on this base?
After using some 2-sided tape and some patience, I was able to get this balanced and sturdy and totally functional. For $20, and it doesn't radically change my decor.
Thanks people! I hope this helps someone else as well!
Ron
It is called the Ikea Funka Coffee Table, just in case one can't click on the link...
DURING THE 90'S, I BELIEVE REGIS'(REGIS TV SHOW), WIFE HAD A SHOW, "HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS." Harden furniture makes a beautiful cherry gas adjustable height coffee dining table. It's expensive but beautiful and of good quality. Also, you may want to share what your looking for with some local used furniture or antique dealers to see if they can find something for you within your price range. I was lucky enough to find one at an antique store similar to the Harden style that was affordable.

I'M GLAD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE LOOKING FOR ONE OF THESE. IF YOU'RE AMBITIOUS, CHRISTOPHER LOWELL MADE ONE OF THESE EXPANDABLE COFFEE TO DINING TABLES ON HIS SHOW. IT WAS AMAZING!!

I have a great table top..now I'm just looking for some type of adjustable base the will go from 16-18 inches or so to a dining height of around 30 inches. Please let me know if you find any potential sources in your searches. Thanks.
Thank you all for taking the time to help others like me. I've been looking for years for the adjustable coffee/dining table. I need at 3 of these tables. Everyone's input helped in some way. Patty
Calligaris produces the "Flexy" in a range of oprions (metal base, wood base). We have one and LOVE it. We use it fully extended but at the "coffee table height" in between 2 couches for intimate dinners for four or Scrabble games, & if we have 6 over for dinner we raise it to the "dining table height" to make it more formal. Of course 90% of the time, we keep it in the compact size (when extended, it opens to double the surface space) and it sits inconspicously between our 2 couches as a coffee table. No one is ever the wiser unless we open it up. We bought ours at Jansen Lewis on 6th Ave and 16th St. I don't remember how much we paid for it, but it was practically an impulse buy when we saw it, so it couldn't have been off the cart.

On ABC Carpet's custom-furniture floor (sorry, forgot which one it is), there was a man I talked to a couple years ago who said adjustable coffee-dining tables are quite common in the hotel industry, because many hotel rooms or suites have such tables for people to work or eat on or use as a coffee table. He told me they are usually round, wood, with a large single-leg base (to house the mechanism that raises and lowers the table); I believe he quoted me a price at around $1,500. I never followed up because I'd hoped to find something cheaper.
My fiance and I have been looking for more or less the same thing - we found a GREAT set at Levitz Outlet - there is one in Yonkers NY on Central Avenue - for the whole set - lift up coffee table and 2 end tables in more of a cherry wood color its about $800+ .. we also found a much nicer looking one through Basset furniture - theres a store located on saw mill river road in yonkers and the people there are wonderful. Im not sure of the price on that one but they work with you and were such a pleasure.
I feel much better knowing I'm not alone in my quest! Here's the closest I've found; these lift _and_ have storage:
http://www.calligaris.it/_Calligaris_inglese/prodotti/html/frm_main_prodotti.html
Go to "Occasionals", then "Coffee Tables" then look at the Container or Pick-up tables. You have to find a local dealer. I'm in California, and I believe the store I went to said these were around $500, but I'm a little fuzzy after a day of furniture shopping. Good luck all!!
i envjoy diet coke
COSTCO has a lift-top-coffee table, light coloured wood...cheap, cheap, cheap.
Check out the TOUCH OF CLASS catalog or website! There you will see a 'Brayden cocktail table set' that is beautiful as furniture and perfect for space-saving. It's a round coffee table with 4 cushioned seats nestled under it, that will adjust to a dining table as needed, according to the blurb. I haven't purchased it (yet) because it's about a grand + s&h, but I have seen nothing else that fits the bill like this item.
Here another one which looks great
http://www.europebynet.com/Detail_nn_sku_ebctb007.html
Big Lots has a nice lift top coffee table for $199.99. It is light colored wood, and the top lifts up and toward you for eating.
I'd NEVER seen the Ligne-Roset but had seen the knock off - the "Esprit."
I was close to buying it (local dealer offers for $1,200CAD) but I've found another similar model I like much more. Here are some links to tease you with.

Are those the bees-knees or what?
The "Legno" is more stylish as a dining table but I really love the Japanese style "Itaca" which is just beautiful as a coffee table but the legs aren't that appealing when extended for dining (looks like ironing board legs, to be blunt)
I have a local interior design store looking for a source of these things but any help I can get to track these down would be appreciated.
Found the manufacturer site:

Thanks for the heads up Alex. Anyone here can check out www.qbmedical.com they have an extensive line of tables as well.
I did a search on Ebay for "adjustable height table" and "lift top table" with good results. Over the past weeks, there's been new lift tops with casters, some adjustable height tables, and a few original, adjustable tables from the 50's - 60's. It's worth a look.
I think I have a picture of the table you asked about in my re-decorating home stuff. I'll try to remember to find it and post the info on this site.

I was looking for a collection of contemporary glass tables for my apartment and thought their collection was extensive and very good I purchased the NYPAN coffee from this company called Swanky Design. Hi Everyone,
I noticed that people are very willing to help out here. I'm looking for a table or cart or whatever, that's about 36"-48" tall and 36" long. These numbers aren't really specific, and the table just needs to be rectangular.
I need it to support a 37" LCD TV, and I don't want to spend more than $175. If anyone knows of anywhere I could find something like this, please let me know. Thank you all so much.
After browsing the web for an ergonomic adjustable computer table I found a product called the NewHeights Electric Tables. These tables seemed to be reasonably priced compared to many of the other tables found on Google. I ended up rolling the dice on this 24" x 48" adjustable table with the black base and dark cherry top. It looks great and work wells too; very stylish. Being able to sit and stand throughout the day has helped make work much more pleasant. I recommend this table to anyone looking to spend some real money on an ergonomic workstation. The benefits out weigh the cost 10 fold in my opinion.

Hi there everybody.
I'm the director of the IDFdesign furniture website.
Visit the lift and height adjustable section:
http://www.chairs.ws/lift-height-adjustable-tables.htm
You can see the best of the latest italian production for the home or residential. Not expensive, not extreme design, just user friendly.
Ok, all the tables are from the source, the producers, so instead of contacting the company, print the table page you like and the company info page, then go to your nearest furniture retailer and ask him to order it for you. Sometimes it takes much less of what you think to get the table.
The problem is:
if you contact the producer through our quote request, they are used to deal with retailers, and can't sell directly, so they probably don't reply... for the sales office representative have not enough grey matter to get you the local retailer nearest to you.
Cheers,

It is possible to purchase the spring-loaded mechanism for a lift-top coffee table if you were up to building the table yourself or having one custom built.
I'm very certain they have one listed in Outwater's catalog, though I'm not going to go digging for it now.

Jensen Lewis sells Calligaris and does special orders. They're wonderful to deal with (I worked with their Internet division).
Do NOT buy from Gately's aka Sleek Spaces! Do a search including the store name(s) and "complaints" and you'll find out why. I had to use Amex to resolve my complaint. It took MONTHS.
