Grocery (or Laundry, Cleaning, Bill-Paying) Day

0609_calendar.jpg

In our suburban childhood, our mother designated Saturday's as grocery day. We knew there was a period of time each Saturday when we would go out together and purchase the groceries. It was never hurried or rushed, as it was time that she had built into the week's schedule...

Now, as adults, we pick up grocieries more spontaneously as we need them - a luxury of urban life. But we still designate weekly time for some household tasks, which makes each one a pleasure instead of a drag. Saturday mornings are floors and sinks, because we're always eager to start the weekend off as clean as can be. Sunday afternoons we settle our bills, as we try to keep Saturdays computer-free. Any weekly housekeeping rituals with anyone else out there? And what determined when they occur?

I too remember having to do a family grocery Saturday every single week. I found it to be such a burden. Nowadays, I love just picking up whatever I need at the grocery store during the week after work instead of spending even a minute in a grocery store on a Saturday. Sunday is off limits. It's all R&R.

Saturday is grocery day, and my husband hates it. Part of it we can't change -- Saturday morning is the weekly open-air market in our part of France (we live on the Swiss/French border).

But the other part of it... shopping in supermarkets here is terrible if you have little children, like we do. They don't have safe cart seats for children, you have to bag your own groceries, have to remember to bring your own bags, the aisles are too narrow... It's crazy. Plus, opening hours are quite limited compared to what we enjoy at home.

Both major Swiss supermarkets have online shopping and home delivery, which is great. But the Swiss groceries are much more expensive than the French, and their selection is not as extensive. So, it is still off into the fray on Saturday morning...

Sure. "Saturday's child is loving and giving."

I do tasks when they need to be done. One exception is grocery shopping. Never, ever, ever grocery shop on Saturdays unless I absolutely MUST. Saturday's are tourist timeshare changeover day here which equates with overcrowded grocery stores filled with tourists (the WHOLE entourage in tow) clueless as to where things are located, blocking all the aisles, and taking forever (still blocking those aisles) making simple decisions (like asking others in their party "does so and so prefer skim or 2% milk", etc.)

I am fortunate that I can take care of groceries, etc. during the week do to my flexible schedule. However, the farmers market is a Saturday morning must....

I also do not turn on the television on the weekends, unless I know there is something good on Sunday evening. I actually unplug it so there is not TV or TIVO electronic hum...

It has become a nice quiet way to end the week.

Farmers market is Saturday morning, as early as we can manage. This dictates any additional grocery shopping as we try to buy as much of our food from market. Everything else is picked up as it is needed, the supermarket is only across the street. Early Saturday market means I don't get to sleep in on Saturdays, but it's worth it to get up and get going, I make much better use of the day when there's an early start.
