apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: Where Can I Find a Barrel Chair?

1-18-BARREL.jpgHello AT,

I know exactly what I want for my living room, an upholstered barrel chair, but I can't find one. I know they may not be the peak of style right now - NONE OF THE BIG SHOPS HAVE ANYTHING LIKE THIS - and it seems the whole world want big, boxy clubchairs. But I really want a barrel chair. I am willing to reupholster a used one as well, but it's got to be good quality. Where can I find the endangered Barrel? Googling only turns up lame places like this. Help!

Thanks, Marianna

Try Room and Board and IKEA they both carry them but at very different price points.

You may have more luck searching for "tub chairs" - that's what I've commonly seen them called. I know for certain that Ikea carries them.

Room and Board only has it in leather it's called Otto. IKEA's version is called Tullsta you can also get covers from www.bemz.com

I had two chairs that are just like you seem to be looking for in storage at City Wide Storage, LIC. I had no room for them in my renovated studio. I gave up my storage room at the end of December. I could not give these chair away. They were high end chairs when they were new. The storage facility 'disposed' of them when I closed my account for $80. How they dispose of these items I do not know. Perhaps if you check with them they are there for you.

I have a Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams one that I bought as a floor model, I think it's this one: http://www.mitchellgold.com/winslow_CHR.asp. It is incredibly comfortable to curl up in.

i've seen chairs like these on ebay, not listed as barrel chairs. try searching for club chairs and see where that leads.
good luck.

Am I insane for saying I don't see what is wrong with ParsonsChairs.net? Besides their web designer... They have a lot of solid fabrics, color swatches and they'll let you provide your own fabric if you want. If they've got the chair you are looking for.

Their chairs aren't cheap (actually, they are about halfway between the Tullsta and the Guffman), but you didn't say it was their prices you didn't like.

I've got the Ikea one I'd sell you for $75, I got it a few months ago, then found a fabulous mid century rocker and now there's no room for both.

Here's one I stumbled upon on EBay. They have it listed as a lounge chair.

I have an awesome Barrel chair, I picked it up at a book store that was closing for 5 dollars.

Maybe you should look into good will/thrift stores and consignment shops? Because this kind of a chair is awesomely comfy and (I think) stylish if paired with the right pieces.

I've seen 3 barrel chairs on craigslist.com in my area in the last 2 weeks. Check out that site in your area. You could find something awesome at a great price.

Note to Supershopper:

THANKS for that Benz link! I love the Tullsta chairs in my office, as do all my clients. But I'm weary of the fabric after 4 years. What a score! Thanks.

Those Door Store "Jaguar" chairs that otan gave the link to are EXACTLY the ones that I have in my apartment. I love them, because they're clubby, but they don't take up too much room.

So if you want to see them "in action" in the context of a 12' x 20' room, have a look at my House Tour, which just rotated itself off the main AT page, but which you can click "House Tours" and then click on the top one.

i have 2 chairs that look just like the ones in the picture that i bought off craigslist. i love them--they are brown velvet and they swivel. when i purchased them, the listing gave them some special name--maybe a brand or a style and for the life of me a i can't remember what they called them--original "something". anyone have a clue? i might have to do with the fact that they swivel?

thanks!

I have an older version of this chair in a custom fabric. It has held up well for several years. I don't know if Jordan's will deliver to NY, but the manufacturer is Rowe, maybe you'll be able to find it in a store near you.
