apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Post Your Baby: Chin-Hua's SSBS Dreamboat

2-1-chin.jpg

We just got this email from Chin-Hua, who has had his apartment filmed by SSBS. He's included a link to the slideshow that shows everything nice and cleaned up for the crew, as well as pics of the crew filming:

This is a NICE apartment, and certainly a strong contender for our next Smallest Coolest Contest (April). Look close; there are a lot of nice touches here. Our favorite? The use of carrera marble as a backsplash in the kitchen while the countertop is wood. Where is this? Our guess: Brooklyn - Park Slope. (Thanks, Chin-Hua!)

Nice that they are a two-cat family in a small space! Suits me quite well.

love the way the bathtub is set up.

omigod, i am seriously drooling. this is perhaps the worst case of apartment envy i have ever had. you are such an inspiration. i cannot even comment on how much i love everything about your place because i am goofing off at work right now and we are very busy. suffice it to say i love everything, everything about it. there is nothing out of place.

one thing - i love the large artwork in the living room. great work. thanks for sharing.

beautiful place. one question: how's that sofa fabric taking all the cat hair? it looks like microsuede.

Love this apt. especially the bedroom. Three questions:
What color is the bedroom wall (blue)?
Where are the bed and side table from?
Where are the bed linens from?

thanks!

I love the kitchen table / island. Does anyone know where I can find it? Thank you.

there are some really nice moments going on here - lots of small apt. problems solved in elegant + inventive ways - love the lighting + the bathroom is great! but then the apt. gets lost somehow, kinda pottery barn , I mean pussy willows?! yeesh.

Very nice! And I'm having pendant light envy--it seems so difficult to find nice, simple pendants that avoid looking cliched. I ended up with ones from Artemide but I think I like Chin-Hua's better.

Maybe I've lived in the West Village too long but anything with a separate bedroom shouldn't be classified a 'small space'...

Nice work, though.

Jody - Some of us genuinely like pussy willows!

Frankly, I don't like the big red thing in the living room. It makes the whole space looks like college kids'. I like the bedroom and kitchen/dining area though.

All this talk of pussy willows is making me blush.

Favorites: wall clock in bedroom, artwork, and those fabulous pendant lights -- please share where the pendants are from. Gorgeous!!! Will be watching for this segment to air!

Hi all,

Glad to hear all the comments. To answer a few questions. The place is in the neighborhood called "Boreum Hill".

The pendant lamps are purchased from Austin,Taxas. I remember one time I saw they sold in some home accessory store in brooklyn. But I can't name it now... Maybe someone can help?

Beautiful!! May I ask what kind of blinds are on the living room windows? Love them!!

Nice apartment. I have to agree that this would be an average to slightly larger than average sized apartment if it is located in Manhattan.

I'm officially a NY'er now. Micro is the new medium. Studios are 1 Bedrooms. Two-level 1 bedrooms are duplexes. Broker fees and middle-men are necessities of life.

this place is beautiful! I cannot wait to see the feature on HGTV.
The apt displays true minimalism with class and style...AWESOME!

i'm still having trouble visualizing the bathroom layout, but agree that this space is beautiful. my question - where did you hide the litter box(es)?

posted by mindy on 2007-02-01 21:39:41

This is one of the best features...ever on AT.
Pottery Barn???Give me a break!
More class in this small space than in a warehouse of PB.
A college dorm? Pussy Wilows? Give me a break......let's see your place folks!

this is one of the most gorgeous and livable spaces i've seen on apartment therapy. chin-hua, can you describe some of the elements that you have in the bathroom - there seems to be a really long medicine cabinet on the wall and frosted glass behind the sink. can you share who the manufacturers are?

posted by coral on 2007-02-01 23:12:59

Stunning apartment! I, too, was particularly enamoured of the pendants. I know that there are many complaints here that modern apartments are too cold, and I think this managed to be cosy while being spare.

posted by Fiona on 2007-02-01 23:34:17

Great place! Where is the cats' litter box hidden??

posted by ktt on 2007-02-02 00:34:31

To answer Mindy's question, I think what is underlying your mind about the layout of bathroom is corret. The bathtub is in the bedroom and open to the bed. The idea is to open up the bathroon area so you can experience the hot spring asian bathing experience at the corner of your most intimate spot in your own daily retreat-bedroom.

Look at this house's design, it is so wonderful. I like the atomsphere in this apt. and how the designers arrange the space. Would someone kindly tell me who is the designer for this apt.?
It's just great!!

posted by Vicky on 2007-02-02 05:44:38

Just to give you a better sense of the old layout and the new space arrangement. I have uploaded the plans. The size of the space is 550 SF. You can go check them out.

The blind is from "pearl river" in Chinatown. I noticed they have started selling it in Conran's. I believe it would be 10 times more expensive...

Please tell us when this is scheduled to air on HGTV.

posted by Louise on 2007-02-02 12:59:04

Love the space! Thanks for sharing.

Also - a request for the above mentioned Smallest Coolest Contest: Can we maybe have two categories this year? Maybe a REALLY small category and then the normal, under 650 sq. ft space? Mine is 250 sq. ft and I just can't compete with the things you can do with 650!

Oh,

The bar table was designed by us and we build it with furniture maker. We want to make it perfectly fit the narrow space.

posted by Chin-Hua on 2007-02-02 14:17:02

this space is beautiful! i'm bookmarking it for inspiration as i love the colors in the bedroom and the shelves in the kitchen area above the long counter table. (could you tell me where the long silver shelves are from?)

really nice.

Shelves from Ikea. They were a nightmare to install. Want to try? Go get one!

posted by Chin-Hua on 2007-02-02 15:35:28

Medicine cabinet was custom-built. For the odd propotion you can just bring your measurements to glass shop. They will cut it for you. Remember to find the hinges before hand so the shop can cut holes for you.

The art work in my living room is a contribution from our artist friend, Elizabeth Lambert Mararian. You can find her work in the following link. http://myspace.com/elizabethlambert

She is very talented, also her partner Micahel Mararian's art is amazing too. You can check them out here. http://www.inkydreadfuls.com/google572e4c226c54e032.html

LOVE this space! i'm most impressed with the use of shelving in the kitchen/dining area.

The circular motif on the living room area rug defies the boxy lines of a long, narrow apartment. it is a perfect touch at the end of a well-designed "tunnel."

One question: do you find it difficult to entertain in a space of this size? What is your maximum capacity for a cocktail party?

I'm adding this space to my favorites - bookmarked!

Hello Ocgrl,

Thank you for your sharing, there have been so many people asking me where they can get the same lamps.

posted by Chin-hua on 2007-02-03 15:11:37

Chin-Hua, where did you get the red lamp in the living room and the black chair in the dressing area of the closet? They are two really unique pieces.

posted by Mindy2 on 2007-02-03 17:36:56

The red lamp in the living room? You mean the one by the red couch? Believe or not? It is the latest product from Ikea. The Black Chair in the dressing chair is Mackintosh chair by blood origin. The furniture maker who we work with build it for me.

Thanks for sharing! It's such a cozy home with strong design sense, I love how you come up with the "hot spring asian bathing experience" idea!

Are you the designer of this apt? Recently I want to do some inteior change for my new apt. It will be great if we can set a time to meet. Thanks.

posted by Chi on 2007-02-04 22:48:31

Chin-hua, I Luhuv your place. Can you tellme where you got the glass partition in your bathroom? Also is that an aluminum and glass door going into either your bedroom or bathroom? Where didyou find that - I love it.

You've done a great job and made a small space seem luxurious.

Thanks for letting us take the tour.

posted by Lynn on 2007-02-11 12:06:25

Dear Lynn,

The glass partition in between bathtub and sinks are designed by me and manufactured by the glass store in Chinatown. I also determined the sizes and the place to locate mirrors on the partition.

As long as you can draw, I think the style and the configuration is pretty much open to what you desire to have from the store.

Chin-Hua, where is that red couch from? It looks like a sleeper sofa? Is it any comfortable?

posted by PS on 2007-02-12 17:05:45

Yes, it is comfortable, so far I like it. They are from APT.
