Post Your Baby: Vicky's Dad's Cardboard Confection

With all the cardboard furniture madness that has been brewing, it shouldn't be surprising that others are coming out of the woodwork with other super inventive uses for this abundant, recyclable material. (Thanks, Vicky!)

I saw the post on the Mac Box Furniture, & thought you guys might want to see the chair in our living room. My Dad & his college design students created this little baby. I love it.

This particular design looks handsome in a little bit more timeless way than most, and it looks a bit less fragile that the Gehry stuff I'd seen. I know that most people don't do "suites" of furniture anymore in their homes, but this would look good like that.

I really want to know how things like this are constructed (glue, I assume), mostly because I really think that this type of furniture would be great for my cats! I'm envisioning tunnels, perches, scratching areas (well, the whole thing would be a scratching area...)

my husband and i built a piece of cardboard furniture for our cat. we were able to, um, "borrow" mass amounts of cardboard from his office (which were 16x20 size, perfect), and we started to laminate together with glue til we realized the amount of glue we would need (can get expensive). we ended up drilling 4 holes through all the cardboard and using steel rods and nuts and bolts to hold it together. we then carved out the top portion of the box to have a little dip in it that Sienna can snuggle into. took it home, rubbed catnip on it...she hasn't attacked my couch since. she even tries to push people off when they sit on her box. and it looks SO much better than a stand with carpet wrapped on it.

I've been thinking of making my own better looking cat furniture out of cardboard too.

I found this but I'm not sure they're still making them -- it's a cardboard cube with a circle inside: http://www.planetdog.com/planet-cat.asp?ID=563

For inspiration, take a look at what these people did. It's amazing -- http://citycomfortsblog.typepad.com/cities/cat_house-thumb.jpg
