Welcome to Marie-Gael!

i'm in a victorian apt. the bathroom was the hardest room to tackle. the tenant before me was nasty (see more pics). there was stuff that looked like velveeta splattered on the ceiling, pee on the floor around the
toilet, peeling paint, streaked walls, & hair in the tub (& in the
ceiling "cheese)...

my bathroom is 6.5 x 4.5. it's odd & tiny. you can tell they've
moved things around b/c there is a soap tray above the toilet (i put a
q-tip box from ikea there) & a toilet paper holder (well, just a space
where it was) over the sink! it's funny. there's also a window in
the shower.

cabinet: because i organized, it actually gave me 2 EXTRA SHELVES!!!
i put took my makeup out of my bag (which cleared up the floor's box)
& was able to fit my irons in. & i think the picture box is a cute
touch. luctite boxes are from the container store.

green plants: these are sitting in a window inside my shower. i
frosted the glass so nobody can see in. they make me happy. i love
plants. the frost is from lowes. they have a kit. the frost from
ikea is a bit more see through. pots are from ikea. & i picked up
the succulants one day at whole foods. they were so adorable i had to
have them.

bunny: this lil guy is in my shower window. i saw him in po furniture
& just had to have him b/c it made me giggle. i think showers & baths
should relax you & make you happy. & if little details like plants or
a goofy bunny works, then do it. ps- po has a really great selection
of modern decor at great prices. i know there's one in columbus.

i have more pictures on flickr with explanations.

thanks!

well, this cheered up a bad day. my ceiling is swelling b/c of a leak last night & there are loud crashes coming from the ceiling. AT LEAST MY BATHROOM IS CUTE! :P

I can't seem to find the "after" pictures. :-P

I think your bathroom needs a little more color. Since your bathroom is on the small side, I would go with bright colors. Ever thought about an antique type of orange color?

Well, that and you know you're capable of achieving a cute bathroom, so a ceiling collapse won't become one of those 10-year never-finished projects like on those HGTV shows where a guy with a power saw bullies someone into laying tile so that they'll have a perfect bathroom before they die.

There are worse things to live for than cuteness.

Nice job! I like the effect of the light coming through clear shower curtain and the window plants are a nice touch!

Oh, c'mon...who among us hasn't gone a little crazy with Velveeta in the bathroom?

If we were voting, this would be my pick. Marie-Gael has dgone beyond making llemonade, she has made champagne. The bathroon is immaculate, serene, and useful. She's made room for humor and personalization. Great job!

chi-

i can't add color. i'd love to, but i can't. i'm not allowed to paint or make ANY "improvements" as the lease puts it. i went w/ white b/c it makes the room seem a bit bigger & less closet like. i did sneak a bit & get rid of the peeling paint by painting over i the same color.

ideally, my bathroom would have glass tiles, teak, & a glass shower, but it's not an option. some of us have to deal w/ a lease & owners who take a month to return a phone call.

it's ok though. i make due & made it my own. it's worth it to live in this neighborhood.

Would the gods of typing please give me back my spelling?

posted by ebrown on 2007-03-23 17:04:02

No -- your spelling is needed elsewhere. And if you're not very, very good, the gods will take away your capitalization, too!

Be warned!

I quite like it. It reminds me of an apartment I once had in the east village. The glass shelves are cute and I love the unexpected bunny. Maybe a little piece of art would be nice to look at as well.

Marie,
I looked at your flickr site and find the bathroom ethereal. I love the green you have chosen as your accent against the white. I would love to see the rest of your place. Hmm. Maybe it's there on flickr. I'll look again.

i have a few pics of my place on flicker, but in another set. it's mostly pics for the cure.

Sorry! I fixed the links for the pictures just now.

Very cute. I may lift some of your ideas for my own, as I have the same severe lack of bathroom storage problem, and it's about the same size.

It's a big bathroom compared to the one in my last apartment, which only barely had room for a funny-shaped shower, a toilet on one side of it and a sink on the other.

i LOVE the plants in the shower - never thought of it and will definitely be doing it. this bathroom is so peaceful and pleasing...

Hey what IS that velveeta stuff? I have it in my bathroom, it seems to return randomly...I'd love some insite to what it is/where it comes from...

Hey Marie,

I love the old Victorian Style Bathrrooms, and I design ,decorate and remdoel bathrooms all over NYC & New York State.
I am a third generation specialized in The whole aspect of "Design-Renovate"
I do more victorian style bathrooms probably then anyone else, the big reason is people are often very confused about what color tiles to use,so I make it real easy for them since they aren't gonna live in a NYC Apartment forever, and the fact that white bathrooms are an easier selling factor and retain value more then any other style..........
White railroad style tiles, with a black border and black mosaic pin dot design floor is HOT and easy to decorate, and always looks more spacious, and especially in a tight NYC apt all my clients have agreed over the years...
You can see pictures of my NYC Apartment remodels at these 2 websites,or e-mail me,I'll send you a ton of my jobs.....

Thank you,and good luck

Velveeta-like crud on bathroom ceiling or wall -

I always assumed it was cigarette smoke that collected in the water condensation and dried there.

posted by Diana on 2007-03-25 14:31:43

Oh, yes, Diana. Another good reason to: A: quite smoking B: Make sure the bathroom is properly vented and C: Use air purifiers

posted by Sis on 2007-03-25 17:06:59

Hmm,
I get the velveeta junk, but I don't smoke. I think the neighbors upstairs smoke, it it possible that I would get it in my bathroom downstairs? Any other explanations for what it is? For a while I considered that my boyfriend had bad aim, but we no longer share a bathroom. And it occurs in random heights/locations in the bathroom.
