Welcome to Robin!
Hello, AT! I read AT every day - it's been so inspiring!
I've attached some pics of my bedroom - I own a co-op in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, and moved in three years ago.
I'm fortunate enough to have amazing light, and the bedroom is actually larger than my entire last apartment! I originally set out to create a zen retreat, but over time it's involved into a girly boudoir...
I needed the heavy dark curtains to keep the blinding light out at sunrise, and they ended up leading the room's direction. For my nighttable, I use an ancient end table my 80-year-old aunt gave me when I first moved to NYC. I DO need a new alarm clock, however (reader suggestions welcomed), as I recently had Lasik and I no longer need a clock with gigantic numerals.
I put up the pink chandelier about a year after I moved in, since I had always wanted one. It's from a store in the lighting district in Manhattan. The dresser is probably my favorite piece in the bedroom -- it was the first piece of "adult" furniture I bought on my own, and brought it to NYC with me from Buffalo, NY. Since it's a hard type of wood to match, I've been mixing woods in the bedroom and it doesn't look half bad.
I fell in love with the vintage wool rug on a spontaneous trip to RePop (which won Best Thrift Store!), and it's great to walk on it barefoot on cold mornings.
My tips? Try to de-clutter as much as possible, but fill the space with meaningful things. Some of my favorites include a china bowl inherited from my late godfather, Hawaiian nut leis, and a childhood photo of my mom.
Enjoy!

Cute room! Love your dog :)
Thanks for sharing Robin! I love your room - such a nice mix. I especially love that chandelier, the doorknob and the metal bird (and your darling dog!)
Beautiful detail photos! What's the map behind the picture of your mom as a child?
A few more overview images would be great, too, to give a sense of the room as a whole.
It looks like your AC is right over the head of your bed. Yes?
I definitely like the room, but I'm wondering about the rug - I'm thinking of getting one very much like that for my bedroom - is it a fluffball nightmare? Do you use the vacuum cleaner on it without destroying either the rug or the vacuum? I was thinking the attachment hose would be the safest bet on a shag that deep.
Looks great in your space; love the chandelier!
Thanks Robin!
What brand/model of alarm clock are you currently using? My eyesight is so bad I *literally* keep my alarm clock on my pillow, and I'm looking to trade up to something better (the clock, not my eyesight - I'm not eligible for Lasik)
I love your sheets. Where did you get them?
I love the sheets too! Do tell!
Your room is adorable. I have one concern, though, being a bit of a health nut it worries me that all that electrical equipment is right next to your head as you sleep. EMFs (electro magnetic frequencies) emitted by alarm clocks and other electronics are potentially disruptive to the body. Some of the research is crack-pot-y, but some is not. Click my name if you're interested in an overview (the links toward the bottom don't seem to be selling anything but information).
I love your room, and especially your dog (he looks so comfy on your bed!). The colours are so pretty and calming. What's the mushroom-y thing by the head of your bed, under the window? A light?
yipee robin and mallow! your room photos look great! my favorites are the rug, the photo of your mom, and the beautiful wood dresser...
Thanks, everyone! I'll try to answer the above. The map is an old map of Copenhagen, one of my favorite cities. I bought it at a street fair in London. Yes, the AC is above my head. The room was originally arranged differently, and it's a pain to move it to the other window, which faces the door. (At the time, the window it's in now was a better placement.) The rug does shed, but not too terribly. I can't sit on it with dark pants without getting covered in white fuzz, though! As for vacuuming, I have to admit I have a cleaning lady and she vacuums it. I can ask what she uses, though! I haven't had the rug for that long, but am nervous about cleaning it when the time comes! The bedding is from Crate and Barrel (duvet cover and shams) and the small decorative pillows are from Target and Anthropologie. The donut-thing is a humidifier with an aromatherapy diffuser. The alarm clock- not sure what brand it is (I am responding from work). It's fine, but the tuning is not digital (annoying) and the numbers are a little too bright.
I will post some "overview" pics on my flickr page later tonight and will provide the link here!
The dog's name is Marshmallow, and she is a deaf chihuahua-mix rescue.
My name on this comment should link to a flickr set of photos from my apartment, including some bedroom extras!
what's with AT readers and pets in the bedroom? yuk!
Thanks for sharing pics of your bedroom, I love the shandelier, the dresser, and also little Marshmallow. I have three dogs who share my bed at various times, and I think more people could use pets in their bedroom!!
Jill,
Unless you are planning to sleep over at Robin's, I don't see why you'd care what others do in their bedrooms. If you don't want a pet in your bedroom, fine, but don't worry about everyone else.
Robin -- thanks for your posting -- i really liked your space -- and Marshmallow.
Jill -- can't speak for others but for me a pet is a member of the family. So they are naturally welcome in the bedroom. and lying down on the bed with your pet snoozing next to you is one of the most effective ways to lower your blood pressure and relax. maybe you should try it.
to keep your Flokati style shag rug clean: give the article a good beating to get out particles that collect over time. afterwards, lay back in position and simply use a foaming fabric soap every other month. this usually comes in a handy shake 'em up dispenser bottle, eliminates any unwanted odors or stains and is not offensive to the enviornment. it dries within an hour and is available at most stores. it is wise to get the rug professionally dry cleaned at least once a year. the cleaning service with pick-up and delivery usually costs around $300.
