Welcome to Robert!

Attached is a photo of my bedroom I just designed. Above the bed is artwork that I produced with the help from a local artist. Each piece of artwork is from the blueprint of the house the bedroom is in. The Artist is Francesco Agresti the artwork was influenced by Richard Dibenkorn's work Ocean Park Series. Attached is also a close up of one of the pieces.

Thank you! Rob Tyra

I really like the stripe at the bottom of the curtains that flows right into the stripe at the bottom of the wall.

Ooooh, that is so beautiful and serene! I love it.

Beautiful lamps. I am intrigued by the shades. It appears there are two shades, did you have a custom shade put over an existing shade?

I agree - the matching stripe in the curtain and wall paint is beautiful

Peggy,

The lamps come with the two shades. they are from BOX Furniture. www.boxfurnitureboutique.com
I'm glad you enjoy the room!!

There is something about sofa art like this that really grates on me. It's a slap in the face to those who actually have a critical artistic practice. If you just want a matching backdrop, try wallpaper.

I love the room and the art but is it just me or does that much art over the bed bother anyone?

It just seems a little heavy over the bed for my taste.

Great attention to detail though.

I love it! What brand/color is the blue paint on the walls?

posted by erh on 2007-02-22 13:47:45

This is far from sofa art, if you are familar with Richard Dibenkorn's work you would know that his works were views from his studio window in Santa Monica. His pieces were bisected views of the water, sky, ocean, and landscape. The top color of the room is to respresent water while the bottom color the sandy shore, and the pebble rug to further that experience. The colors were pulled from the view out of the window. I'm in Sunny Sarasota, FL. I see the Beautiful Gulf of Mexico out of the window.

erh- that color was a custom mix from Pratt & Lambert

The colors and proportions are well thought out, but the art arrangement is conceptually conflicting. Is it art or is it decoration? Either way, it's way too much.

I have seen this room in person, and all I can say is Wow! The ability to use color so effectively in a modern context is truly a gift! Rob was able to warm the room with just a small selection from Box Furniture's awesome line.

Agresti's art is boldy colorful yet still maintains the relaxed ocean atmosphere. What a personal touch to use the actual blue prints and have orginals!

I imagine the miniscule few "who actually have a critical artistic practice" are used to getting slapped.

But what do I know? I only buy the art...write the checks... show up in a nice dress...

Thanks for all the comments...good bad or otherwise it's great to hear feedback. If we all liked the same thing it would definitely be a very boring world. Thanks to AT for the opportunity to open up this wonderful space for the discussion of all things wonderful. Keep up the Great work AT!!

Wow - can't believe the comments about the "sofa art" - I think those pieces are gorgeous!

This room is great. i dig the circular rug at the foot of the bed.

Way too much art on one wall. If you were to hang it salon style, ok, but to arrange it around furniture is... eh, if you can't think of anything nice...

I like the room without the art. If you like the art, the most respectful way to display it would be against neutral or contrasting paint. The reason why art galleries have white walls is that it makes the art look better. Partially obscuring the art with a lamp is rude.

The professional artists I know would be seriously embarrassed to see their work like this.

I see the yellow at the bottom of the curtain and wall also is the same height (and color) as the bedskirt - nice detail and well thought out.

posted by 2T on 2007-02-22 15:01:04

I agree with ryan. The paintings on their own might be quite nice, but to arrange them in such a decorative and crowded way ruins their strength as works of art. In this case, maybe *less is more*. I definitely would be embarrassed if someone hung my paintings like that, sorry.

I love the blue and orange! The art is crowding around the bed, but I think the pieces themselves are beautiful. While I feel like the wall/curtain accent is a clever idea that would be striking with more muted, less contrasting colors, the follow-through with the bedskirt and the pillows on the bed is a little too precious. All in all, very pretty.

I agree with Curtis - that yellow band around the bottom is a lovely touch.
And I think the art on the wall is wonderful. It could run the risk of being too much, but I find it daring to hang all the pieces together like that, and I believe it was executed well.

When I think of "sofa art" I think of art picked out to match the upholstery, and the art clearly came first here. I do think there is a lot of it, though.

But very pleasant and warm. I love the curtains and stripe of color and that rug looks as if it feels great underfoot.

posted by Valerie on 2007-02-22 17:20:08

Quite beautiful: the colors, the set up, the stripe along the lower wall that carries through the curtains. Enjoy.

Valerie,

The rug that you like is made by a company that uses products that are "left overs" from different industries. This rug called "PEBBLES" is made from terry cloth from the production of towels. This company uses leather from the upholserty trade, nylon from the production of women's hosery, and other product to produce the beautiful from "TRASH" they keep a lot of things from being added to our Earth.

Bella,
Thank you, the color in the room a a little off--The blue is actually the color of the Drapery Panels--you can tell from the photo it looks different-Same with the Bottom stripe color it actually is a Sand color--both were color matched to the fabrics from Pratt Lambert

Art arrangement competes with the headboard. I would do one or the other. Too much if you have both. Otherwise, very nice.

posted by maria on 2007-02-22 19:35:11

I like the artworks very much but the two at the sides of the bed lower than the others are too much - take those two away and leave the line of 5 above and the room would go up in classyness - nice otherwise

It seems that a room so simple and clean yearns for a wash of art all over the walls. The premise of the room is living on the ocean, the colors represent sand water and sky. If you are LIVING in this room, you have time to contemplate each work as a group or individually. Seven pieces, seven days of the week...coincidence?

I agree the arrangement of the art may be overwhelming at a glance, but isn't it rather conceited to think that all Agresti's efforts were intended only for the computer audience. Have you no concept of a human actually spending time in this room? To paraphrase Marvell...

You have not world enough, and time,
So this coyness, bloggers, feels like crime.
Perhaps you could sit down and think which way
To view this room and pass the day.

How rewarding it must be to the artist and designer to have generated so much discussion!

Such a lovely post!
She must know that Francesco Agresti lives on the ocean and spend lots of time studying the colors and the light!

Has anybody seen his website?
its awesome stuff!

as for the art critics.
This is in the West coast Symphony Show house.
so maybe thats why it seems a bit much,
also the room is way larger and has even more,
get this, ART
Its the "Ocean Symphony Series"
