Dominos at The Domino Bazaar

10-13-dominos.jpg
How appropriate!
I went to The Domino Bazaar this morning and picked up these Slam dominos from Umbra. They're the standard double-six dominos with a handsome solid walnut sliding-top storage box. Growing up, I shared a beautiful ivory (how un-PC!) domino set in a similar box with my sisters...

The designer of Slam, David Quan, also designed Luminos for Umbra.

I promise I'll post photos of the event when I can upload them from my camera!

i've never understood how to play dominos, but the top ones make me wish i did.

also, ivory dominoes aren't "un-PC", they're unsustainable. which isn't political commentary, it's semantic.

Get yourself a set Opop, the directions are in the box. We like a game called Mexican Train, a nice mix of luck and skill, for all ages to pass a fun evening together.

Thanks for the timely update! I'm heading to the Bazaar tomorrow hope there will still be good stuff left.

excuse me for saying so, but i paid $25 to get into the "domino bazaar" and it was a waste of money. i don't so much care about the $25 but i'm utterly confused how they can advertise this "bazaar" when it's 1 small space with a few things for sale. i didn't know what to expect but it certainly wasn't the priviledge of buying a cashmere throw from abc. there are literally some pillows, small cotton area rugs, a few other assorted things and that's it. it's hardly an event.

Thanks for the heads-up, stef! I was going to head over there tomorrow, despite misgivings about what seems a high ticket price -- but perhaps I'll stay home and make curtains for the bedroom instead.

happilyever,

stay home and make curtains, the bazaar is definitely not worth it. i tried to purchase two things at the bazaar at 11:15am and they didn't have any stock in either one, and i don't think b/c they sold out in the first hour (it was a small stuffed orange giraffe for a baby gift and a candle). some cool stuff, but kind of disorganized, disappointing. maybe they will have things together a bit more for tomorrow?

i left feeling really confused. not at all what i thought it would be.

oh crap.
i'm going to the Domino thing today, not even to spend money but just to get some ideas and inspiration and stuff. sounds like there's little to be found. well, at least i can write it off.

loveforever, maybe it will be better today. i set high expectations on it, i guess i should have just gone not knowing what the expect.

at the very least, there were some yummy croissants and fresh fruit. : )

BIG disappointment. After all that promotion, I couldn't believe how PUNY it was! Hope Domino rolls out something MUCH bigger and better next time. Love the magazine and the audience is definitely there for an event like this.

I was also hugely dissapointed. not at all what I expected. Beyond small, I didn't think it fulfilled it's promises. I thought the majority of the items were expensive, and in some cases, more costly than I have seen them at other stores (ie the Umbra Oh chair for $56). A total rip off.

I want my money back from the "Domino Event". What a joke. It was tiny, and disorganised. It was the unevetn of the year.

The Domino event was an embarrassment, and a painful rip-off. We spent $25 each for 2 people, and spent 10 minutes there. We literally could not figure out how to spend more time there - there were so few booths and displays. Going across the street to West Elm offered more "design inspiration" and discounted sale items. I couldn't see the point whatsoever. It seemed like the purpose was to be a media event for Domino - not sure what the possible value was for the attendees. I can't believe how much money went into promoting and putting on this non-event.

I'll definitely keep my subscription - but I'll never attend another Domino-sponsored event - at least not one I have to pay for.

from my email note to grace of the ever-fabulous design*sponge:

"RE: DOMINO BAZAAR it was just so poor. incredibly small, very disorganized and hgtv cameras prevented free movement.

you paid $25 to "shop" by checking out samples, then submitting your selection checklist at the cashier. it was horrendous. the selection was decent, but i was there only 1 1/2 hours into the 2-day event and they were already "sold-out" of tons of things. 90% of the women around me waited up to 30 minutes in a tiny hallway only to hear that domino "couldn't find her selection in inventory." i selected an ooba baby blanket and plan to contact the vendor directly to purchase. the cashier said i was the first to purchase one, yet mysteriously they were sold-out. the refund process was another 15 minute wait line.

the seminar speakers didn't have microphones. poor things couldn't be heard by a single listener. so difficult and i sensed their frustration.

each entry ticket was given an address form for a free one-year subscription to domino. a hundred bucks says it doesn't happen. none of the (50+!) domino girls knew what to do with the form and i saw several of the forms stuffed behind a couch in the entry way.

i adore the magazine and was so disappointed after traveling from texas to the event.

I have to agree with all of the comments. Domino should be embarrassed by this event. My group didn't even stay for an hour, and we really tried.

I just noticed that HGTV is now advertising the show that they were filming about this event will air on November 11 -- it looks like they have a big show planned for a prime time slot. I guess they had a lot invested in this, hence the ridiculous number of cameras. I'll be interested to see if creative angles and clever editing can make this show look like something interesting or if it will come off looking as sad and disorganized as it really was.

My best friend and I had been planning to attend this thing since August and we were hugely disappointed. I was looking forward to nifty design tips, inspiration on how to make creative use of small spaces, and ideas on how to furnish and decorate tastefully on a budget without looking like an IKEA showroom--these are all things I get from the magazine. The Bazaar, however, was just a media and spending frenzy. The products were not that exciting--I could have found them on my own in Soho or on the internet--and way overpriced for the mag's young, urban woman demographic. They were selling a 5-inch tall rose quartz obelisk for $85. Come on, people.
