She wants to move the bathroom to the kitchen and convert the bathroom to a bedroom.. Good luck!!!! This is like 100,000 reno even if possible!!!!Why doesn't someone tell these idiots some thing are too costly, and better to spend more upfront then later!!! You just can't fix move thing in NYC apts.. I just spent 3 month renovating in a 125 yr old NYC bldg and the apt is only 300 sq feet and a loft!!! the reno was supposed to take 3 weeks!!! GOOD LUCK, what a joke.

I'm drooling over the space, but the decor looks a little college-y. Although, I guess for a 22-yr-old dancer, that's pretty appropriate!

I'm jealous of people whose parents help them with college and a down payment on a home. I'm on my own in that department.

I can't believe it. I just renovated a bathroom in NYC with just this layout. My husband and I moved things around a bit. We put a double shower encased in glass on the terrace door wall instead of keeping the bath off to the right. We put a sunbrella curtain in front of the french door.

We can take a shower with the door open and the curtain closed and feel like we are taking an outdoor shower in the summer and after a shower we can open the curtain to let the sun and air in.

Its almost finished being renovated and I cant wait to use it.

Everything except for the bathroom is pretty boring. So, paying half a million dollars for a light-flooded bathroom? Kind of silly. But, it would be cool if my parents bought me a house. I am, after all, "throwing away money" renting every month, working my tail off just to live here. Must be nice to be a talented, privileged dancer!

I do question the ability to just swap bathroom and kitchens for to do so means removing drains in one room, adding drains in another room and it might be more doable if the floors are wooden instead of concrete, which in this old building most likely are, still, that's a big undertaking but I can see her point, the bathroom is huge and appears to be large enough for a smallish bedroom.

As for the decor, what there is of it is not bad for a 22 YO who still has many, many years ahead of her to learn how to decorate and all that. Seeing her ballet shoes drying against the radiator is what makes the space look lived in

it's funny to me that this was run in the new york times. The bathroom is beautiful, but the rest of the apt (and the bathroom too, actually) is basically just college dorm room decor - which would be fine to publish if she did something creative or special with it, but she didn't. Most of my friends' apts. (if they're lucky enough to be in ones with old detailing) look pretty much the same. I mean, perfectly acceptable to have that, esp. at 22, but strange to feature it in a world-renowned paper.

I adore this apartment, and I certainly wouldn't move the bathroom -- imagine taking a bath in there on a summer evening with the terrace door open? The decor is blah, but, to be fair, the occupant is indeed young and the piece appeared in the real estate section, where decor is not meant to be the focus. The lovely dancer seems charming, though I agree that only the immensely privileged get to have their parents buy them a studio for half a million bucks!

I think of the Habitats section as not so much an altar to rarefied decor, but rather a section which highlights the people and places of New York. In bustling cities where we are constantly jockeying for jobs, status, and heck, even a seat at the movies, apartments become even more important as havens from the outside world. They become intimate representations of the people that inhabit them.

Would Nicola Curry's apartment be featured in the pages of a glossy like Domino or Elle Decor? Probably not, but it's an interesting person in an interesting space, and it's all her. That's what I think Habitats is about - weaving human narrative with peeking-over-the-neighbor's-fence curiosity all wrapped up with a touch of design. It's a slice of New York life, and for Habitats, it's perfect.

Oops, make that "mention." And I'd add that there's something enchanting about knowing a young ballerina lives in that lovely, old-world-style apartment, which indeed seems perfect for a dancer.

I don't like her bathroom. It's too old and looks like it's cold. The flooring needs work, and the bathtub looks tiny. It definitely needs some work in my opinion.

Oh, I suppose I should actually comment on the apartment itself too. I think that space makes a gorgeous bathroom, but it would be a bit of a cramped bedroom. There would be no way to fit anything bigger than a twin bed in there without at least partially obscuring the terrace door or the door to the living area.

Admittedly though, if she finds a way to cram a bathroom into the kitchen, converting that space to a bedroom would increase her property value a great deal. It would be a shame though. The space makes for a charming bathroom, but an awkward bedroom.

Its such a CUTE and cozy place. The bathroom looks quite large for a studio apt. But I'd totally take this place if I was single.... : )

I was wondering how a dancer could afford to buy an apartment in New York! The way I remember it was more like her earlier experience (2 bedrooms, 6 dancers). Haha

The bathroom is so lovely - all the better that you have to walk through it to access the terrace.

Before I comment on the bathroom to kitchen swap, I guess I would like to see the kitchen space and location.
I love the apartment and think for the amount of time a dancer spends in the dance studio and performing vs at home and her age the decor is explain.
BTW - did anyone see any closet space? I didn't and thought that was odd.

Wow. You all must have had way nicer dorms than I did. I think this is charming. I like seeing how other people live. And I'm amazed that someone can make a living dancing. She may be privileged, but that sounds like hard work to me.

Love all of the picture. Why are so many salty comments about her living situation and her parents helped her. She maybe an only child or someone left her a big sum of money. I love her minimalistic decor. Especially her bed...I wonder how I can get mind to look so high and fluffy.

I hate stupid rehabs and gut renos. Why can't the average american appreciate the innate charm of certain older buildings/rooms/fixtures?

I think its a lovely apt. and i would love to have it but definitely cant afford that price! would have liked to see the kitchen and maybe another pic of the bathroom. Dont think i would be contemplating such a drastic renovation but she is the one living there. I think she has done a lovely job with the place, she is just starting out!

Please don't change that bathroom Nicola! It's so beautiful. I absolutely love the old and worn look. The cracked tile on the wall, the rough floor, it's so charming. Bathroom renos are a dime-a-dozen. You've got a real gem there. Enjoy!

I would have loved to live in a place like this when I was young and living in NYC, sharing tenement hovels with too many roommates. Maybe it's misty-eyed nostalgia, but I think this is charming.

That is just the kind of comment that shows a lack of knowledge of what it's really like to dance for a living.

I am not a professional dancer but I know several of them and can tell you that the life of a professional ballet dancer is one of the hardest ones there is. You give up a normal childhood to train and shape your body from an early age. Rehearsals are long ang grueling, and even if your career's not cut short early by injury, you will have to retire in your 30s or 40s because no body can do all that in middle age. Twenty-two might seem young to you but she is already in the middle of her career. I would call that more of a textbook definition of "working my tail off" than my own office job.

Ms. Curry made it into ABT, one of the most prestigious and talented ballet companies in the world, which means she is both extremely talented and even more hard-working. Yes, she is lucky to have help from her parents, but it makes me happy to know that some dancers can achieve financial success. Many others are working just as hard but just scraping by without even health insurance or a reliable income.

atimetodance is absolutely right. An ABT dancer is one of the few and the talented, just like players in major league baseball; kudos to Nicola Curry and all you ballerinas and professional dancers out there!
