Yikes! We've always been fans of Curbed—especially their Floorplan Porn. Lockhart has added more about interiors with the category That's Rather Hideous—questionable decisions in interior design as revealed in real estate listing photos. What do you think? See the full listing at Halstead...

Ok, questionable, yes. But hideous? Really?
Yeah... Not everything in those images above work well, but I'm not sure I would say "hideous". At least there are interesting or colourful touches. Most people's homes are contrived and utilitarian.
That corner is so tricky. Especially with the view on both sides. I'd have recommended some type of corner built in or maybe v-shape bookcase to casual reading chaise in front of it.
I actually kind of like the one with the red couch. But the other looks like it belongs in the sitting room of a Kentucky state senator.
It looks like bad staging to me. The larger furniture pieces are okay as individual items, but overall everything is just out of scale and/or there's no attention to line or how the forms relate.
YUP I agree. Looks like bad staging---like there used to be a lot more junk in the apt and they took a bunch of stuff out--but what's left still doesnt go together. That tufted loveseat for example and the pine farmtable look like they were hand me downs from someone else's apartment. But I do like the builtins and the seat cushions and red chairs....the scale of a lot of the pieces seems off..
(I kind of like the red room. The built-ins are cool)
i agree- not all THAT bad, but then i realized these photos are from the same house. which makes it worse. but as a graphic designer for a real estate company in coastal NC, TRUST me, i have seen way WAY worse.
Yeah, it looks like a nice place, just needs new furniture. Nice views, built-ins, woodwork, rug.
A George Nakashima coffee table with THAT loveseat ans occasional table? Throw out everything but the Nakashima, the red Chinese Chippendale chairs and the modern sofa... but reupholster the damned thing!
That wood table is a designer piece? Amazing! I think I was sitting on one earlier today.
I have actually been sent the details of that place as a possible next purchase - its actually a great layout and its right on central park (the ultimate garden!) - I think once you strip out their furniture it would be a great little place
Ugh, hate Lockhart.
If he deems those hideous, he needs to get out more.
(and room one, with a better shot and a better angle AND a stylist? He'd be drooling over it on the pages of Domino.)
