Graphic Designers Will Hopkins and Mary K. Baumann gave up their apartment in the Apthorp building on the Upper West Side and moved into a converted flour mill in downtown Minneapolis. The New York Times shows us how the couple and their architect, Geoffrey Warner, transformed two basement apartments into a well-lit live/work space with plenty of character...

One of our favorite features: casters were attached to a pair of Room & Board tables and they rest in a 50-foot floor track. The tables can be quickly moved from dining room to office.

Notice how the ceiling gently curves to create a "cloud" effect.

That couch, positioned directly under the massive iron beam, has got to be bad feng shui.

This is the kind of article that makes me bitter. You can bet that this couple was paid a good amount of money to vacate their 2000 sqft UWS rent-stabilized apartment. They were paying way below market for their previous apartment AND they purchased their new awesome 2600 sqft. apartment with their previous landlord's vacate-money. Where is the justice?

It's not an injustice; they got lucky, got booted out in some way, and now have a great new live/work space! It's such a smart rehab.

I think jems means that it's unjust that it didn't happen to jems. That's how I feel about it, anyway :)

I've been browsing Apartment Therapy for a while and just had to comment on this post...
One of Minneapolis's local magazines (Mpls.St.Paul Magazine) did a special feature on homes for their September issue: http://www.mspmag.com , which included this very house. I was somewhat surprised when I saw it here, too! :)
Come Sept. 25 there will be photos of this house and more in the Twin Cities area posted on the Web site if you all are interested in checking them out, plus more about Will Hopkins and Mary K. Baumann.
Just to keep things clear, I do intern there, but I figured that this might be an interesting addition to the content already posted here. :)
