apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Lori Levine's Gramercy Duplex
The New York Times

The New York Times takes us inside the Gramercy duplex of Lori Levine — where a nearly two year renovation turned the apartment in an 1850s townhouse into a space fit for entertaining that "acknowledges 19th-century bones while dressing them in 21st-century style"...

The 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment takes advantage of the 16- and 20-foot ceilings and is filled with custom furniture and lots of storage. Check it out in The New York Times: As Seen in Her Dream and audio slideshow.

beautifully detailed architecture. the rooms are surprisingly comfortable & relaxing while glamorous. I assumed, after reading that it was a two-year reno, that it would be more stylish (in a bad way) but I was wrong.

I love the way they've hung the art in this room.

Does anyone remember the name of the reality tv show from many years ago that Lori Levine used to be on? It's not RHONY, it was about single women living in NYC and their dating stories. Anyone?

That is pretty darn incredible looking. Between the fantastic molding and hot decor.....hard to pick which one makes the biggest impact.

It's obviously stylishly done, but if I had a historic townhouse, I wouldn't have an open kitchen.

There was a show Single in the City with women from NY and their dating lives... the designer from HGTV's Spice up my Kitchen was on that... I don't remember Lori on that show... but it was a while back and only a few pivotal scenes really stuck with me...

Love it! Except I have a thing for couches that don't face the tv... do you have to sit sideways to watch it?

i love that the TV is not the focal point. looks like a wonderful spot for conversation - and the moldings! good lord, we've have a lot to talk about. :-)

The architectural details in this apartment are really stunning. I do love the art! However, am I the only one who thinks the design/decor should be improved a bit? Not sure... Is this a before photo of a makeover/redesign? Both rooms seem like they could be less cluttered and disorganized. The conversational area in the living room is very spaced out. I feel like I would have to shout to the people sitting across the large coffee table. Is the bedroom color a purply mauve? The way it's painted with the darker tone on top shortens the room. Wires are clearly visible, too many little trinkets on the mantle, and the bedding looks like it could be a little more loved. The colors of the apartment are bland and there's not much flow or continuity between the rooms. Maybe they're not the greatest photos? Overall, the apartment is amazing and the design and layout of the room should reflect that.

YES! Thanks everyone. I've been trying to figure this out ever since I saw this post. In regards to her apartment- I completely agree with you corinadesign.

Agreed, the place itself is beautiful and I do like the paint colors very much. The furnishings look average and and I hate to say it but a touch sloppy. What's with all the wires on the side of the fireplace in the bedroom?

Jeeze, people complain that some photos are over styled and not true to what the home usually looks like - and then peple complain about a photo containing a few wires? Seriously people, someone lives here. I like that we can see that.
