The artist and designer Roy McMakin designed an offbeat home for Steve Jensen on Vashon Island — a short ferry ride from Seattle. The homeowner is a collector of the artist's work and wanted a custom modern farmhouse like “the one in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ — after the tornado.” We're fans of the concrete walls and floors and the 10 different shades of gray used to paint the interior...

The house is oriented to take full advantage of winter sun and minimize the summer sun. It features additional quirks like dutch doors and windows set in a pattern that isn't altered, even if the staircase interrupts the window.
