In this week's close-up look at International Real Estate, The New York Times shows us a recently renovated one-bedroom duplex apartment in Casco Viejo, the colonial district in Panama City, Panama. Located in a historic building from the 19th century that blends Spanish and French colonial styles, the apartment features arched windows, floor-to-ceiling bookcases and an exposed stone wall from the 17th century...

It's a nice apartment and all - but I'd be wary of living in Panama...
...when we stopped there on a cruise last year, we had armed guards surrounding the cruise-terminal area and the areas outside of the terminal looked completely bombed out - even the harbor was full of little old half-sunk tramp freighters that our captain had to pick through to get to the pier.

bepsf,
Armed guards surround Grand Central and the subways of NYC, and gawwwd, the things we have to wade through to get to the trains....

MJR--
I guess it's been a couple years since I've been to NYC...
...but I never felt unsafe walking the streets.
However there's no way I would have considered leaving the port area in Panama - the soldiers there urged several folks to reconsider leaving the terminal for their personal safety, and every shore excursion had armed solder/guards.

Panama City is one of the best places I have ever been, with this historic section of town a memorable highlight. Backpacking thru the capital city was not an issue - the people we met were both approachable and friendly, always responding with a smile when we mentioned that we are from Canada. The only area we did not tour is the El Chorrillo district where the fires from the American invasion '89 left many Panamanian's homeless.
I'd pack my bags and be ready to move in a heartbeat!

wow that place could be stunning once you get rid of all the horrid furnishings.

Bepsf,
I know, I was just pulling your leg. I mean it's true about NYC, but I get what you're saying. I spent many months working in Belize, and it was like that there. There are places there that I wouldn't suggest anyone -even my worst enemy- explore. Or accidentally wander into for that matter.

Panama is very safe and very beautiful country. The armed guard situation is just something they have always done and that is why they have such a low crime problem. As a new yorker I think Panama is very similar to any place in the world. There are always certain areas you try and avoid by yourself at 3am. Visiting any country via cruise ship travel hardley ever allows you to see the country for all this it is.
