River House in the Czech Republic
The New York Times 2.10.09

czech-house-1.jpgWhat happens when a woodworker and artist moves into a 400-plus-year-old stone house in the Czech Republic? The New York Times guides us through the whitewashed stone home of the Zukowski family in the town of Cesky Krumlov. Situated on the bank of the Vltava River, the old and damp house was renovated over time using second-hand materials whenever possible...

Mr. Zukowski bought the property when it was abandoned and filled-with trash. When he began to clean it up, he turned a large room into a hostel (how he met Mrs. Zukowski). The 3,315 square foot home has its share of problems — mostly due to its age and close proximity to the river — but where else could you sell beer to boaters through an open window?
