Swiss Bunkers: Photographs by Leo Fabrizio

Who knew that Switzerland was home to so many bomb shelters and bunkers? Swiss photographer Leo Fabrizio spent 5 years documenting a selection of both the obvious bunkers and the bizarrely camouflaged bunkers in Switzerland. Some of these places are the perfect locale to act out your Lord of The Rings fantasies...

These photos make me wonder how many bunkers I missed on my trip through Switzerland last summer! It's amazing how some of them become part of the landscape.

Fabrizio's photographs are available as a book: BUNKERS Switzerland 1999-2004.

Every Swiss house is supposed to have a bomb shelter (the inspectors were amazed when I told them last year that no other country in the world has such a requirement!). They are replacing the ventilation system in ours this summer (kept trying to convince me that it was brilliant if there was ever a chemical leak somewhere).

I can't figure out what is going on in that fourth picture. I'm pretty sure the fifth one leads to the Mines of Moria at some point. :)

I live in a tornado-prone part of the Midwest where storm shelters are common. You can buy them premade and have them installed in a hillside or wherever. Several of the ones shown look like they came from similar kits, but with crazy camouflage!
