Architecture firm EM2N used the existing basement and large property footprint to build a 3 room addition and patio below grade (including a slide and outdoor shower!). This greatly increased the size of the house, but did not effect the scale of the neighborhood or take away from the original neighborhood plan. Cool!

Is that a slide going straight into that yellow bathroom? Very cool.

Genius! I love the patio idea because it allows for so much light and a feeling of openness you don't normally get in a basement.

How fabulous!
Sadly, living in Florida with the water-table so near the surface, it's not a option.

I'm with modtramp. This would not be a do-able Florida design, but it sure would be great in any area where the terrain supports basements.
I love the bathroom....but it would feel a little less than private if you weren't home alone.

I think I've seen the yellow slide / stairs before somewhere else. Looks like the makings of a funniest home video to me (someone greases the slide, someone crashes through the bathroom window).... sure hope the bathroom window is not see-through from the other side!
love it though!
