Since opening in 2006, Red Hook's Erie Basin has become well-know for its collection of 19th and early 20th-century jewelry, but it also has an equally well-curated selection of objects for the home. The store is filled with those things that you're always hoping to find at the flea market, but never do. Owner Russell Whitmore's curatorial approach extends to researching and labeling every object with precise identifying information..almost like a museum label, but with prices!
Eagle Ornament, Folk Art Carved Pin, American, 1850s
The majority of objects in the store are from the 19th century or early 20th century, but Russell mixes in modern objects that rift on that turn-of-century aesthetic such as Ted Muehling Nymphenburg Wing Dish., which was displayed next to glass taxidermy eyes from the late 1800s, and brass candlesticks with ejectors from the 1880s. It's definitely worth a visit. And Erie Basin is right across the street from one of our favorite Brooklyn bakeries, Baked!

Geez. There's a lot more going on in Red Hook now than when I lived there!
Are those floors stained very dark brown, or are they painted black? Either way, they look great with the white walls and wood objects.
