apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Grace's Berlin Balance
Room for Color - International #1

thumbs up

Name: Grace
Location: Berlin, Germany
Type of Home: shared apartment

Color Inspiration: Necessity! I arrived in Berlin with a nothing but suitcase ,and became the proud resident of an empty, square, white room. I didn't want to end up having the room look like I was squatting an IKEA display, so in the grand tradition of penniless students I hit the flea markets and streets.

Give Grace a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!
Thumbs Up Voting is only activated for 48 Hours — so don't delay!

Grace's Berlin Balance

Color Inspiration continued: I like keeping the basic furniture very neutral, that way when I get bored, all I have to do is change the bedding and get some flowers, and it's a different look. The room can go from warm neutrals to cool blues and back. Only exception is the armchair which is not very neutral at all — it's rather pumpkin-like but it had me at hello.

Colors Used: renter's white

Color Tip: improvise and break rules!

Simple and nice - I do have to question the TV on the bedside table. I'm all for a TV in the bedroom if you want one, but I wonder about it's functionality where it's placed.

Berlin's flea markets are the absolute best. I still have some things that I picked up in my year studying abroad there, and every time I go back (I have to return every few years or so to make research trips), I try to be on the museum island on a Sunday, in case I find some fourteenth-century Italian prints, or a full DDR-era tea set.

Couldn't you make the bed? I'm just saying....

Now I want a black vase (and to throw out my bed linens and sleep on a naked white sheet).

Love your witty text and all the pics. A warm and inviting room! (Your mother would be proud - even if the bed isn't made.)

Ok... isn't this contest about color?... if so.... why all the thumps up b/c this is VERY lacking of color.... It's a noce space, but "colorful" as a descriptor... not so much

I like the room ver much - nice and calming, created with soul!
I think it's all about the right use of colour and it's simplicity without trying coercively to use a much colour as possible.

Yeah, I have to agree with a previous comment. It's a very ordinary-looking room, not particularly outstanding in terms of color.

I second a previous comment about the bed... I was a little surprised to see it hadn't been made. Weird.

Hello! I have the same Ikea bed and I also painted it black. What a mess, but it does look so much better than the original!

It looks exactly like a student's room. The paper lanterns tacked to the wall and the low budget linens are a dead giveaway.

Ugh. There's always someone who gets SO offended when people make honest assessments. I guess everyone gets an A for effort now, huh?

hi, grace here- thanks for all comments, sweet and sour! ;)
@ rmhct : I'm a musician (a violinist) so I came to Berlin to work and also study,
@boccadel perro : I love Museum Island! Mauer Park and Arkona platz are also amazing for endlessly fascinating trash and treasure

for all those concerned with the state of my bed, I must admit that I deliberately chose this photo over a few with the bed all neat and tidy. Personally, I love looking at photos of rooms that look lived in, as if someone just woke up, or left...and this just seemed so much cozier and real.

Simplicity is beautiful! Loved mainly the small details as the vases with touch of colors placed on white spots...and the little stool with books on the top is cute.Young and fresh!

Sorry, but this room doesn't stand out and certainly not in terms of colour.

I love what you've done with the room. Makes me *almost* want to toss out all of my belongings and start again!
