Kayla's Song-Inspired Bedroom
Room for Color - East #6

thumbs up

Name: Kayla
Location: Cheshire, Connecticut
Type of Home: Single Family Home

Color Inspiration: When I thought about what I wanted my room to look like, I thought about the atmosphere created in the songs of my favorite songwriter. They make me think of an old city in twilight, overlooked as dirty and spoiled by some...

Give Kayla a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

Kayla's Room

Color Inspiration continued:...but containing a great deal of tattered beauty for others. The colors I chose reflect the essence of this scene in my mind.

Colors Used: I don't know the exact brand names, but the colors are dark brown, yellow, green, black and white.

Color Tip: I don't know the technical rules for using color successfully, so I would say to use colors instinctively in a way that makes you feel comfortable and happy in your own space. And if you need inspiration, I find that looking at pictures of other peoples' brilliant homes can give you great ideas.

Beautiful room!! The colors are so warm and cozy, which is what you want for your bedroom. Love the yellow & green accent colors. Your beautiful cat matches perfectly in there. I wish my room back in my family's house was that nice!

I like this a lot. It would be hard to be sad in these surroundings.

I wonder who her favorite songwriter is?

I guess Tom Waits!

Is the old typewriter in its case workable? I wonder what brand it is. Kayla is OK by me.

I never would have chosen those colors and yet this looks AWESOME --the way you have put it together. It is a cozy den with flashes of color, texture and light! I am so impressed!!!
You have a brilliant eye!

Way to brighten up that dark brown color. It could have ended up being gloomy but, instead, it's warm and cozy. Imagine having this room to hang out in on a cold, grey winter's day. Jammies. a cup of tea or coffee, a good book.

Excellent.

I love the room! The colors are restful and soothing. The accessories go along with that mood. I assume the lamps are the muses of music and song -- perfect! The contrast of the greens with the brown brighten up the whole space in a very modern way. The old typewriter and record player, along with the classical lamps, give a sense of the nostalgic and perfectly balance the modern color scheme. Bravo! A room very well done!

very sophisticate design for a teenager (I'm assuming a teen from the single bed). For not having a technical understand of colour you have an amazing natural eye for colour as well as texture and pattern. Did you paint the dressers and desk yourself? Wonderful and creative use of colour and patterns.

I have been working in interior design for thirteen years around the New York City area. I am blown away by this room - the color combinations are excellent, the furnishings original, and the style unique. Kayla certainly has an eye for design.

A pleasure to view this room! That bedspread is so original and makes a difference in the look of your room. The lamps are amazing - I want both of them.. The well placed wall decal and light are great. One of the commentors alikened this to a teen's room?? ...I'd be really surprised if it was...really surprised. Great decor Kayla - very creative and thematic...just a thought as well...A round bright yellow or green shag rug on the floor to bring it all together...or would that deter from the atmosphere of the musician :)

I like it. Strikes a great balance between eccentric, cozy, and homey. Seems like the perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon, scheming on various projects, writing, or listening to music...

This is crazy cool! Love the checkerboard on the desk, I have contact paper like that and used it for commercial displays. I like how the fish net stockings work with the checkerboard as well. Good job.

Apparently the above user does not like ANY space. I find this infinitely amusing. And I'd LOVE to see their home! http://community.apartmenttherapy.com/com/User/jdoz

thank you all so much for your kind comments. i am definitely an amateur, but i have really become infatuated with design. it gives me so much pleasure and i'd probably do it even if i stunk at it, but your words have given me confidence that maybe i don't (completely)!

This is really beautiful. Giving me goosebumps, beautiful.

And I heartily second HCVMama's guess at the artist (himself!), but not sure I could say why. Must be the mood evoked here.
