They are available in four color sets, each with six solid colors and six related patterns. We particularly like how this provides an opportunity to add color and drama to a space that is often ho-hum. Standard treads are $70, top and bottom treads are $90. (Via ATSF)
Man - for that price why not just carpet the stairs?
Are they slip-proof? Methinks not. That plus the price makes the product doubly offputting.
I'm not usually an alarmist, but these seem like an accident waiting to happen.
I know Liza - wonderful and super talented woman. No, they're not skid proof - what carpet is? These stair pieces are so beautiful in person and even though pricey, the fact that you can create a "story" and mix it up is so cool. When you get tired of one arrangement you can change the layout. Can't do that with regular carpet tacked to the stairs.
I wonder if cutting the Flor carpet tiles to size would result in a similar (but cheaper) look.
You could easily make these little rugs slip-proof by using double-sided carpet tape or spray-on repositionable adhesive on the back.
Cute but deadly.
I really can't imagine how it would be possible to NOT break your neck on most trips up or down these stairs.
surely they must be rubber backed or something, PLEASE tell me they have something that will help hold them in place.
I can't remember the amount of times I have slipped down stairs with slippery, thread bare carpet that the landlord wouldn't replace.
I'm sure they must have something otherwise its a law suit waiting to happen specially in Americas litigious nation.
Gee, $70+ a square foot for hand-made carpet squares. What a bargain. I hope her Nepalese suppliers are getting a good cut of that.
Also, anne asks rhetorically, "No, they're not skid proof - what carpet is? " The answer would be, "Any carpet you put on stairs." Sure, most carpets lack some sort of rubberized backing, but unless these carpet squares are fastened to the stair treads, or at least have some sort of backing to keep them from sliding, they're going to make the stairs pretty treacherous. And I don't think that's the kind of "drama" most people want to add to stairs.
According to the site, you can buy *separately* a set of adhesive-backed mesh, which you can then cut to size, if you want skid-proof steps.
So no, your $70 a tread does not get you anything that prevents the little rugs (made from high-lanolin wool, so slipperier than average) from skidding. Looks is $70 a tread; safety will cost you extra.
These look fussy. I'd prefer a carpet runner installed up the middle of the stairs, with wood showing on the sides.
I'm sure these hand knotted rugs are lovely - but you can totally do this from Flor carpet tiles - for WAY less $$$. I did this on the spiral staircase in my last apartment - it was a metal staircase and the noise it created made me nuts - I used a heavy duty double stick tape to attach after I cut the tiles into the right size/shape.
just 'tread'?
