Modern Polar Bear Rug: Made From Recycled Blankets

ours2big.jpg

French designer Lise Lefab lives in the Netherlands where she created a spin on the bear rug using recycled wool blankets. These traditional woven Dutch blankets are being replaced by modern comforters and so end up in large piles in thrift stores. Lise reuses the blankets showcasing their intricate patterns. Check out the more detailed shots.

We wrote yesterday about the prevalence of animals in home decor. And back in April, we also posted about a Joe the Polar Bear. (Who knew there would be so much Joe talk in November?!) To order contact Lise Lefab through her website. The rugs are custom made for each client, but for the standard such as the one shown, Lise charges 700 euros plus shipping.

Another sad reminder about the crisis these poor creatures face.

Its a little too flat to work as a bear-skin rug.

I wouldn't mind a few of those blankets, though. Beautiful pattern.

I LOVE this post! The rug...well, not so much, but I sure did like seeing it. I appreciate that every post does not have to be a successful design or product that most will agree on. Thanks for shaking it up, Amy A!

It's cool and creepy all at once. There's no way i'd have it in my house and yet.....NAW, just couldn't do it.

The cool factor has melted away.....it's just kinda creepy now.

Let's play word association!

fake polar bear rug:
"um.. things you can find in Sarah Palin's office!"
"uh... polar bears becoming cannibalistic because they can't access food due to global warming! oh, wait - that's happening to real polar bears"
"death and decay! with yarn!"

(the reason why the bear is howling is because it's got a chair leg jammed on its thigh. Owie.)

this one is only a polar bear because the blanket is light-ish...
it'd be a grizzly bear if the blanket were brown...

and the mouth is too realistic compared to the cartoony eyes..

brrrrr......

agree with khanzen re: the mouth. Creepy.

An obviously fake, cartoonish version for a kid's room might be cute but... eh, still too many sensibility issues. There's got to be another cool way to reuse these blankets. I'm sorry they're being replaced... this one is - er, was - really nice.

OMG! I had a pink synthetic bear rug when I was a tot and had nightmares about it for years...

and now its Baaaccckkk! EEK!

And for all you Palin-bashers, I think it looks quite a bit like Obama when he smiles, so don't be so snarky.

I love the idea of a faux polar bear rug, but I'm not crazy about the execution of this one.

After my initial reactions (below), I realized --- HOW DUTCH! OF COURSE! The sensibilities are different there, and I would almost enjoy it in that context (@ someone else's house). Now it makes me laugh.

But initially, I thought...
like: pretty blanket design & gold embroidery.
like: reuse idea.
iffy: craftmanship
yuck: creepy, sad. makes me sad. Bad&sad associations.

Gosh -- I just noticed my error -- that the designer's French, living in NL. But still, she's going to have a concept behind her projects, not just making things aesthetically pleasing.
