NY Good Questions: How Can I Turn My Sisal Into a Rug?

I have a large scrap of sisal carpeting (approximately 6' x 6') that I would like to turn into a rug.

I have no idea how to go about doing this so any advice on where to go to get it cut, trim and bound would be greatly appreciated!

Interesting question. This is one we've never seen before. While all the rug and carpet shops in the city send their material out to get cut and bound, we don't know many distinct names of the places that do this. We do know two names, however, of local rug restoration and cleaning companies which we would definitely check out:

• Costikyan Carpets, Long Island City, 800.247.RUGS
• CleanTex, Upper West Side, 212.283.1200

We would also give ABC carpet a call and ask them if they can recommend a sisal binder specifically. We don't know how helpful they'll be, but it's worth a try.

Oh, and don't be surprised if it seems expensive. Binding can really cost you.

You could also try Better Carpet Warehouse on Atlantic and Bond in Brooklyn. I bought a wool sisal remanent from them and had them bind the edges. When I moved to a smaller place, I had them cut it down and rebind it. Not too expensive. They pick up and deliver.
