Dear AT,
I have been looking for a large area rug for my living room for ages and finally found one I love and would be perfect.
It's called Verona, made by Lanart, and is handmade 100% felted wool.
My question is: Does anyone have a rug like this? How easy is it to maintain?
I have a little white dog that sheds too.
Will I be able to vacuum his fur out of this one? Thanks! Jennifer

I have friends who have a similar rug as in the photo, a fairly expensive one. No need for a dog or cat. They're going nuts about all the hairs the (white) rug sheds everywhere in the room. On the other hand it's really comfortable, you could sleep on it all day, just preferably not with velvet or dark colored clothing :-)

I have the rug in the picture (from West Elm) and it has not stopped shedding in the year that I've owned it. It's like I have a sheepdog. Any suggestions for me too?

I have the shag rug from cb2 and it has shed for three years. More expensive rugs may shed less but everytime I'm at a nicer rug store I put my fingers through the nice shag rugs and still get tons of fibers on my hands.

Unfortunately it will be be like having two little white dogs in your house. It will continue to shed on and on again.

Absolutely agree to everything that's been said. We had the felted shag rug from Pottery Barn for 2.5 years and it seriously felt like we had a huge white dog living in our house. It looked awesome, was SO cushy and comfortable but unless you like cleaning, I'd try to go with something else. Also, vacuuming seemed to get it clean but it also seemed to make it shed more!

I concur with all the other posts. I too have the West Elm felted wool rug and yes it sheds everywhere all the time. I still love it though.

we thought about purchasing the west elm felted wool rug and the sales person actually advised against it, citing many returns and unhappy customers, surprised by the amount of shedding. instead, we are opting for the cable rug at room and board.

I have the Pottery Barn (Crate and Barrel?) one called "Quinn," and it sheds but not too badly, IMO. I probably broomsweep the living room every 2wks and get a half-dozen little dustbunnies from the corners and under the sofa; I vacuum it (blush) pretty much just whenever older relatives are coming, and it nearly fills my tiny bagless with fuzz. All in all, easy to live with for me. Had it for about 8 months now, but it's been the same from the start.

I had an older Quinn Shag Rug from Pot. Barn that shed like crazy; however, I recently returned it (because it also had a horrible tar smell) and got a brand new one. The new one is great-no odor and doesn't shed. I had heard that the newer Quinn Shag rugs are better in this regard.

sasquatch brings up a question I've had for a couple of weeks. I have a wool rug that suddenly started smelling like rubber tires!! Why? I've had the rug for 3 years and it's quite nice and from a reputable rug dealer. Anyone know?

I have the rug, and I like to refer to it as my little pet because I'm always vacuuming up after it - BUT it makes me vacuum more than I might if I wasn't constantly reminded by little puffs of white hair everywhere. And I've had it for a little over a year now and it sheds significantly less than before. Its the coziest thing ever. I am worried about getting it cleaned properly because after a year of just vacuuming it, its certainly no longer pristine white. Has anyone had there's professionally cleaned?

We had an Ikea rug that started smelling like (burnt) rubber tires. We gave it to Goodwill.

It's my understanding the smell comes from the glue/latex backing. Or it could be the smell of the chemicals use to de-contaminate rugs when they're exported from other countries (it's the law). I've always been told the smell dissipates after being aired out, but sometimes that can seem to take forever when your whole house stinks.

I bought one from Pottery Barn a little of 18 months ago and it has stopped shedding.
Unfortunately its not easy to keep clean. I don't wear my shoes inside my home but it still gets fairly dirty. I have a cat and she absolutely loves the rug. Because the rug is ivory (or some such thing) and her hair is black, its quite obvious where she spends her time. If I had to do it over again, I would not get the rug. Only because of the cat. (The shedding drove me absolutely crazy though. Crazy enough to buy a Dyson Slim. Vacuuming the rug alone would fill the canister.)

For burnt rubber odor, read this (very long, complete) thread on Apt Therapy:
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/good-questions/good-question-why-does-my-new-rug-smell-000956
And if it is from Pottery Barn you should def be able to return it, even after many years- they know of the problem.

These rugs will shed but after time the shedding will get reduced . Most of these rugs are hand tufted and are held to the canvas backing with latex which in many cases can also smell.
check these rugs as an alternative

Hey,
I like the Verona Rug a lot! Where did you find it?
Another felted shag that I have come across is from Roost:

Anyone have any experience with this one?
I had been looking at the Pebbles rug from C&B, but apparently they discontinued it. why, oh why??
