Deep Pile Moroccan Rugs in April March's Elle Decor

The March issue of Elle Decor screams What's Hot Now in neon ink across the cover — and though the editors never officially put deep pile Moroccan Rugs on "the list", 4 of the 6 featured homes have deep pile Moroccan rugs with a very similar graphic pattern. And a fifth home features a similar Turkish Wool Prayer rug! Are neutral Moroccan rugs the new suzani of shelter magazines?

They coordinate with nearly everything — the examples below are in both modern and traditional settings:

1 Yancey Richardson's Chelsea apartment has more than one of these rugs — this story is not online. (pages 140, 143)
2 Hollywood director Brett Ratner's master bedroom has a Moroccan rug credited to Mansour Modern. (pages 96-97 )
3 Artist Anne Becker has one in the bedroom...
4 ...and a pink version in the hall! (pages cover, 131,133)
5 Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham's wife has one in her studio. (page 118)

alhambra rug 5'x8' ivory/espresso

We recently got a sneak peek at the summer line from West Elm and they've got a similarly patterned rug — Alhambra Rug available in 5 sizes ($109 - $749).

Can't put my hands on it presently - probably put it down and didn't finish it, therefore the lack of recognition. No worries! Not anymore, :)

And the most recent West Elm catologue was all Morroco all the time with similar rugs. Definitely a trendlet.

Recently retrieved a Elle Decor, March 2006, from the recycle dumpster and it features Cindy Crawford's house. Her rugs, got my attention and I saw them for sale on the blog, My Marrakesh, and wondered about the prices.

I do love those moroccan rugs, there was even a shop at the chelsea market that sold them as well as john derian who has a large selection of them. there has been a lot of editorial on these rugs in the past 3 years and they are now a decorator status symbol.

a wee sidenote:
(um... it's "Free Tibet" Day: today is exactly the 50 year shameful anniversary of the chinese occupation of peace-loving Tibet -- and the images of evil Mao Zedong are burning, burning my eyes!!)

Uh springisnear, that is an IMPORTANT sidenote.
Shame, Shame, Shame. I don't understand this Mao trend. Glorifying a psychopath. Sickening.

I urge those that might buy a West Elm rug they are so cheap and fall apart the ends look like crap after a very short time and if you vacuum their rugs they pile. I had one in an area of the house where it was hardly touched. If there is any sun it will fade fast.

These rugs have been turning up everywhere for years because they are easy for unskilled weavers to make and therefore plentiful at the source. Given some of the prices I've seen for these in New York showrooms, it seriously might be less expensive to fly to Marrakech and buy it there (and in any big shop or souk stall they will give you mint tea and baklava while you haggle).

Hmmm, coincidental MAO image shows up today on AT, of all the days in a year! When fifty year ago **today** China's genocide of Tibet began and the Holy Dalai Lama was forced into exile, fearing for his life. Where's the respect?

These Beni Ourain carpets are beautiful and they go with absolutely everything. The Beni Jarmouche carpets are equally fab and cozy. These types of carpets are made in the mid- and high Atlas mountains where it is chilly, and something warm is called for. And they have actually been popular for over 30 years! Unfortunately, the new Beni Ourains are inferior in quality, often using a synthetic blend (rather than all wool) and using bleach to make the wool creamier looking, rendering the fibers fragile. The vintage ones are great and don't pill or shed.

They sell at ABC Carpet & Home and other similar vendors for $4000

I did a post on them on my blog a while back: http://moroccanmaryam.typepad.com/my_marrakesh/2008/12/moroccan-beni-ourain-carpets-time-to-get-cozy.html

And I have a little collection of them for sale at discount prices. You can see pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mymarrakesh/sets/72157604504345411/

I love the vintage rugs of Morocco. They are in every magazine these days. I am a designer in San Francisco and I have used Moroccan Beni Ourain rugs from Tazi Designs. They offer 20% discount to the trade. You can expect to pay round $2000 for a large thick wool carpet.

I really don't think Aaron intended to offend by posting this. The focus of the post is not about Mao decor, its about Moroccan rugs.

When you fall in love with original vintage Moroccan carpets, you fall hard! I've been collecting fine old pieces for years, with the help of my Moroccan Berber husband, and now we make some of our lovely authentic finds available to others: http://www.maroctribal.com

They're gorgeous aren't they? And a fabulous orginal one will really last a lifetime - they were woven for lots of hard family use in the cold Atlas Mountains so are made to be strong and soft. If you find the right one it will be love at first sight, so take your time and pick one you adore.

We have a few, which we tracked down last month on a trip deep into the mountains, and they'll be coming to our website soon - http://www.maroctribal.com - so keep a look out.

10 minutes spent searching the web should reveal a few sellers who source really great - new and vintage (although these are getting super-rare nowdays) - pieces at decent prices. Think about paying $1,000 to $1,600 for a lovely piece that will last a lifetime, more if you're after a truly authentic old piece (make sure its old - don't forget to ask the right questions!). New pieces can be gorgeous so don't shy away from them. Just pick a rug you'll love.

We've got both new and vintage on www.maroctribal.com!
