TRIPLE PIER ANTIQUES SHOW
November 5-6 & 12-13, 2005
The Real Thing
Vintage style is everywhere these days but the real thing, real vintage, will be in New York on November 5 & 6 and November 12 & 13, 2005. That’s when the cutting edge 1,000 exhibit Triple Pier Antiques & Collectible Show sets up at the Passenger Ship Piers 88, 90, & 92.
For two exciting weekends, in the know shoppers, fashionistas of note, interior designers, architects, fashion designers, magazine writers and stylists along with stars of stage and screen and collectors from all over the world converge at the cruise ship piers to shop, shop, shop for real antiques and real vintage collectibles. Why do stars and designers shop here (Hilary Swank, Rita Wilson, Whoopi Goldberg, Martha Stewart, Ralph Lauren, Betsy Johnson, Donna Karan, Bunny Williams and Fred Schneider to name a few)? Because it’s all here, from prehistoric artifacts like dinosaur fossils to vintage bakelite and furs from the 1920’s and 30’s to mid-century modern furnishings, sixties art and fashion plus fine, folk, and fun art, silver, bronzes and diamonds too. Designers come for inspiration, decorators for great finds in furnishings for their clients and collectors for treasures and great prices. Some of the innovations featured this year at this world renowned trendsetting event are:
Pier 88
Vintage Fashion
Vintage fashion is so hot that a whole section of Pier 88 has been termed “Fashion Alley”. Here you will find most of New York’s best known dealers in vintage clothing and jewelry for men and women. Gowns, furs, suits, sweaters, bags and more, all real vintage items dating from the 1900’s to the 1970’s.
Cashmere
A vintage fashion company named “Right to the Moon Alice” will have over 300 cashmere sweaters priced from $25 to $150. Most of the best quality Scottish and Italian cashmere will cost $35 or $40. Some unique sweaters with designer names such as Chanel and Ralph Lauren will be a little higher at $75 to $150. Alice offers not only great buys on real vintage clothes and cashmere sweaters but great advice on wearing, cleaning and caring for vintage fashions.
Vintage Furs & Wild Bags
Bags are in and every style of vintage bags will be among the miles of shelves of vintage bags here ranging from shapes like telephones and animals to teeny tiny jeweled reticules and every famous name: Leiber, Gucci, Hermes… Vintage furs for men and women will be abundant at the Triple Pier Antiques Show. The dealers here have vintage furs in great condition, fabulous styles and fantastic prices. Fur trimmed suits from the 1950’s and 1960’s and the short jackets and capelets that are so hot now along with full length minks & lynx and fur scarves and bags too.
Cocktail Picks
>From Paris, France comes Le Iris Bleu with not only French shakers and glasses but the largest collection of figural colorful vintage French cocktail picks you have ever seen. What are cocktail picks a youngster might ask? Cocktails were invented in the 1920’s to cover the poor taste of bootleg booze. They gained in popularity and designers created all kinds of new accessories to go with them. Today we use a toothpick or just drop the fruit into the glass but the1920’s chic things had beautiful Bakelite picks to go with their shakers and special glasses. There will be abundant selections of sophisticated 1920’s to 1940’s cocktail accessories on Pier 88 at the Triple Pier Antiques Show.
Beads
At the Fashion Alley section of Pier 88 you could bury yourself in wild unusual old bead necklaces and bracelets. You can see in the September issue of Martha Stewart Living, Martha painted her new Bedford, New York house in the colors of the lava bead bracelet she bought at the Triple Pier Antiques Show.
West German Pottery
Unusual and seldom seen but West German pottery is the next hot collectible in the ceramic field. Once you see it you will forever know what it is. Kate Spade is collecting it and
no wonder, it is colorful and has great shape and texture, just like her bags and accessories. One of the world’s best experts, Foster Poston will be at Pier 88 showing it and answering questions from the public about it.
The Gail Mendelsohn Collection
On special exhibit, the fabulous collection of high fashion accessories acquired at the Piers over the past fifteen years by art collector, Gail Mendelsohn. On view will be the most outrageous but tasteful costume jewelry, bags, sunglasses and other fashion accessories. The best of the best! Every fashion maven will drool over this unbelievable collection of fashion rarities.
Pier 90
Flags
American flags and patriotic folk art are a hot decorating motif today. Jeff Bridgman of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania will offer a selection of interesting historic flags from 1850 to 1950, nicely framed, that offer a lot of decorating pizzazz at less expensive fees than most paintings of the same size, presence and age. Flags integrate nicely into traditional and modern décor. Many dealers will offer patriotic folk art signs and quilts also. On November 12 & 13th author and expert, Richard Pierce will join him and appraise flags for the public.
Vintage Plumbing
Loo Loo Design is the name of a company that specializes in vintage kitchen and bathroom furnishings. They will create a fabulous bathroom using vintage sinks, tubs, showers, mirrors, sponge, soap and cup holders and other charming and interesting Victorian and Art Deco bath accessories. Proprietor, Web Wilson, is a hardware and stained-glass expert and he and his wife coordinated the Scalamandré sale last fall when the company closed their New York factory. Last year he conducted the search for the $10,000 doorknob, which he recently found! The doorknob sold for $9,300 at auction recently.
Pier 92
Lighting
The most fabulous chandeliers, sconces and lamps are reasons to make The Triple Pier Antiques Show the choice destination for home décor. From well made early plastic (not today’s flimsy stuff) and sputnik styles from the 1960’s and 1970’s to massive sparkling, bronze and crystal chandeliers to boudoir lamps and formal sconces, every decorator can find lighting fixtures here to give real originality to their project. You will find lamps and fixtures made from logs, horns, bones, jewelry, toys, dolls and garden statuary.
Jewelry
The real, real thing, diamonds, rubies, sapphires and more. Designed and crafted old world style. Great buys abound from reputable dealers with lower overhead than jewelry stores. Art Deco jewelry from the 1930’s and 1940’s is currently under-priced and a great investment. Not only can you enjoy wearing the beautiful colored stones and diamonds but they are sure to increase in value drastically as the popularity of the style grows and these stones and styles become harder to find.
Appraisals
On November 6, 12, & 13 Antiques Roadshow, pop culture appraiser, Gary Sohmers and Daile Kaplan, Vice President & Director, Swann Auction Galleries, will be available to appraise prints, paper, photography, ephemera, and collectibles. Customers can bring their Elvis dolls, 1960’s theater tickets, autographs, and photographs and get them valued for a $5 donation to charity.
Restoration
On November 12 & 13, the Stella’s have gathered a group of special artisans who can restore, repair, re-gild, re-glue, re-weave or refinish patron’s beloved heirlooms and valued furnishings. Customers can bring objects or photos of objects in need of repairs to get expert opinions and predictions of costs of such restoration. The restorers include: Jarett Holub, ceramics; Brian Stair of Oxford Restorations, and Thomas Abad for furniture, Sheelin Wilson gilding and lacquer and others for metals, textiles, rugs, art and jewelry.
The Triple Pier Antiques Show will take place Saturday and Sunday, November 5-6, and again November 12-13 with 1,000 different exhibits, on Passenger Ship Piers 88, 90 & 92, 12th Avenue & 55th Street. Admission is $15. Children under 16 accompanied by an adult are admitted free. There is plenty of parking in the neighborhood. Show hours are on Saturday are staggered: Pier 90 opens at 9am, Pier 92 opens at 10am and Pier 88 opens at 11am. Sunday show hours on all three piers are 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For additional information, call Stella Show Mgmt. Co., (212) 255-0020. That pair of white chairs is to be lived for.
love & indeed want those chairs!
For those of you that went to The Modern Show and found that the prices were a little high - you should check this show out. Even the littlest of shoppers will find something to take home. I wish I had discovered this show sooner (I work here now. Pier 88 is the 20th Century Decorative Arts Pier. Hope you enjoy it.

I have a question, will all the good stuff be gone if I don't make it this weekend?
susiq--
According to many of the dealers last week, a considerable number of dealers THIS weekend are new (many from last week don't do both weekends.)
So I'd say definitely give it a shot. It was good fun last weekend, with lots of bargains... but still a healthy dose of "aspirational" pieces". :)
I'm actually headed back for round two this weekend.
Hello, iam interested to sale at the show, what must i do to get the next schedule in spring 2006 or whenever your next show is?Since iam coming out of georgia iam specialized in vintage clothing and assesories regards regina
I have a Carved Inlaid Japanese Coffee Table my Grandfather gave me before he passed away and I would like to know if there is any value to it?
How would I find out it's Value if any?
Lust for more West-German Ceramics ?
Regina,
If you haven't already figured it out, go to:
http://stellashows.com/
They have a list of all their shows. Too late, probably, to get into the January show, but there's another in March. They have online applications, or print and mail, and there's an e-mail link, of course.
Forrest (who has been doing the shows for a couple of years as Ginfor's Odditiques, that West German pottery specialist who got called Foster in the story)
