AT Walks The Island: 4th Year! Tomorrow!

The weather report looks good. Come walk with us on Marathon Sunday. RSVP here or at our Broadway Walk Meetup page. Each year for the past three years, we've invited our readers to join us while we walk the entire length of Broadway in one day. The weather looks GOOD. We finish by sundown at 5:30pm...

Each year is unforgettable, healthy and community building. This year we're doing it again and inviting you all to join in and bring your friends. Our walk date is Sunday, November 4th - the same day as the New York Marathon...

We start at 220th Street at @8:45am, right by the Broadway Bridge and just a few blocks up from the 215th stop of the 1 (red) line subway. If you want to meet downtown, we start at 8am at Christopher street station and ride up with our coffee. You are welcome to join us at either point.

After that we will be walking down the avenue until we get to the end at the Battery. We'll be FLICKR blogging our progress on the site (every 10 to 20 blocks) if you want to meet up in the middle, and lunch is usually around halfway: Zabars at 80th.

If you want to find us it's not super easy, so we urge you to get up early and come join us at the start. We don't wear crazy clothing or anything like that but we are reachable by phone, which we'll post the day before the walk.

Raindate??? If it's really awful we'll post a raindate to the site by 7:00am that morning.

Unforgettable? Especially last year, right?

Sounds fun. Why not use a different Avenue each year?

I used to do these (mostly solo) in St. Louis. I called them "city hikes." I'd just set off from my apartment in a general direction (with a camera) and see what happened.

Any plans to expand this to other AT sites? ATSF walks the peninsula, maybe?

Yay! This was so much fun last year! I'll definitely try and join in again, but I have guests in town so not sure if I can.

Every now and then I go on a Metro expedition in Washington -- explore a new neighbourhood or spend a day visiting all the used book stores I can reach by Metro (Capital Hill, Bethesda, Dupont Circle and so on), or some such Quest. The Walk the Island sounds like fun. I won't be in New York that weekend but will be thinking of you.

K-8, what a great way for your guests to see the city!
(assuming they are physically able)

I went in 2005; really enjoyed it. And seriously, the time kind of flies by, because almost the whole route there are interesting things to see, and the pace is really not at all grueling, and there are a couple of stops along the way.

Ursula will be there and says "come one come all!" (Actually, all she can say is "duckie," "ut-oh," and "daddy" but she means to say something inviting!)

That's all my last date could say and it was very inviting.

(Sorry, could not resist!!!)

Is the walk dog friendly?

It will be my first year and I'm super excited.

Thomas: My bulldog did the AIDS walk a few years ago- a spry puppy of a few months- and she was beat after ten blocks. If you can't toss your pup over your shoulder for half the walk, I suggest leaving her in bed with a milkbone that day.

Will there be potty breaks, or should we wear Depends like that crazy lady astronaut?

I'll be in Philly, but I'll be thinking good thoughts in all of your downtown-bound direction.

Oh no! I won't be able to make it this year. I will be out of the country. I am so disappointed, I want to cry. Maybe I will get lucky and it will rain like last year and the date will be postponed.

I hope you all have a great time!

If anyone who can't make it Sunday is interested in an alternative date or route, please post here!

This Sunday!? How brilliant! There is a little race taking place in NYC on Sunday . . . it's the NYC Marathon. Even if you are not running, you might want to support friends, or strangers, who are. Nice job with the scheduling of the walk.

So brilliant! But I have no time to go. It is a pity.

oh man, the first year I have a place to stay in NY and you do it on my boyfriend's dad's 70th birthday. I was really looking forward to this because I started working in NY in April and have not had a chance to do any exploring at all.

That said, I can't wait until next year!

Everyone have a great time so I can live vicariously through you.

Isn't Saturday night/Sunday morning the day to turn the clocks back? Make sure you aren't an hour early!

That's my very sleepy 2 year old waking up from her nap in the stroller in the slideshow. We had such a great time, but now we have a 3 week old. Not sure I'm up for the whole thing this year. Definitely post the phone #, maybe we'll meet up later in the walk. How old was Ursula on that walk? Pretty young from what I recall.

Where exactly IS the "Broadway Bridge," in relation to the corner of 220th Street and Broadway? I'm thinking of doing it this year, if my feet and knees are up to it. But if I were to ride the bus up Broadway and get off at 220th Street, would it be obvious which way to turn?

I'm excited to finally be able to meet people from Apartment Therapy! I plan to meet up with you all at Christopher Street at 8AM and my mom will also hop on at the 34th Street-Penn Station stop (she's coming from Long Island). This walk is such a great idea so I look forward to meeting plenty of great people and seeing a lot of cool sites!
