Mulchfest 2006

12-29-mulch33.jpgWe support Mulchfest, and it takes place this weekend - Saturday and Sunday, Jan 6+7 - all over NYC:

"MulchFest provides New Yorkers an opportunity to bring their Christmas trees to designated sites where they are ground into wood chips. The chips can then be placed in tree pits and gardens..." Get all the info HERE.

Looks like this takes place NEXT Saturday & Sunday Jan 6/7 rather than this weekend.

This could almost make me want to get a real tree next year.

I wonder if you should be calling this MulchFest 2007 instead of MulchFest 2006?

I've been trying to find out if the Dept. of Sanitation is participating again this year by picking up trees curbside and, if so, what day they will pick up. Does anyone know?

Does anyone know if the mulch is available to those NOT donating a tree? I'd imagine there are probably more 'givers' than takers...?

I'll be at the 3rd street entrance to Prospect Park tomorrow eagerly awaiting your cast off trees. Having volunteered for Mulchfest for several years, I can confirm for Sandra that there are more 'givers than takers' of the bags of mulch but the vast majority of the mulch created will be used in the park itself. The Department of Sanitation will also be picking up clean, unbagged trees left on the sidewalk between January 5 and 16 so that's an option if you don't want to haul that Balsam Fir for blocks.

Caren,

Yep, it looks like DOS is picking trees up curbside from today until January 16th. I was trying to figure out the difference between lugging my tree to 3rd St and just dropping it curbside for DOS. It looks like both will be chopping and mulching trees - one for the parks, one for the people.

neat.
I just saw another xmas tree recycling project where they gave the used trees to elephants in the Berlin zoo, both for playing with and munching on. just about the cutest thing ever! they gave them to other animals in the zoo who yearn for greenery even through the colder months of the northern hemisphere...

Thanks, Rocknrope. I hauled our tree out the curb earlier this evening.

Sandra, as far as I remember, anyone who needs mulch can take mulch.
