We were just walking back to the office and we saw that George Smith has rented out the old bakery right around the corner for their big sample sale and there's a lot of stuff left. We called to see if the sale was still on. Good luck, it was supposed to end last weekend, but they've extended it through this Saturday.
There's a lot of nice comfy English style sofas and chairs in there, and they're half off.
• Up To 50% Off George Smith Floor Samples
• Through Saturday, June 3rd
• 73 Spring Street & 148 Lafayette Street
• 10-6pm (call first before heading down to Lafayette)
• (212) 226-4747

man, that sofa makes want to claw my eyes out.
add a "me." also, I'm not even kidding.
Amazing. I was just about to say that I love that couch. Probably my cats, would, too--oh, well.
I can't afford them even at half off. It was less painful waiting for the sale when I anticipated prices slashed to below below below but the new number next to the slash is still too high.
Holy crap! That's one hideous sofa. I don't think I'd take it for free. I'm not sure at what price I'd consider taking it...that is, someone paying ME to take it. Now, let's take a gander at the website and see if there's a price for that thang.
Oh, too funny:

7'0 Large Standard Arm Sofa in Kilim
Kilim
$13650
$8200
The rug goes on the floor. The sofa can be covered with leather. Both make up a rustic, cabinish look. They have others that look much worse in the combo rug-as-sofa look. But, the stools (aka ottomans) with the rug look are okay.
The dining chairs are kind of nice. I'd rather have seen Native American styles with a nice, chunky Spanish-influenced base. Sort of like the chairs here:

And weavings here:

Or more contemporary rug styles here:

Maybe some kind of cooperative that would have the chair(s) custom made for the buyer. Wood carvers carving, and rug weavers weaving, creating beautiful items.
I'm fond of the greys, browns, blacks. I'm kind of surprised that I've never seen many of the Native American items shown in contemporary decor.
This rug:

Would go with just about anything on this page:
http://www.conceptfurniture.com/classic_all/cr_idx.htm
So, just in case any of you out there are looking to add some interest to your modern decor, you might want to consider looking up Native American rugs. The real deal will cost a whole lot. But you won't see them in everyone else's home pictures either. Uh, unless this starts a trend.
My dream George Smith is not the above style, but I will have one. I will. You can't stop me.
Andree--
Kilim-covered sofas can be gorgeous, and they wear like iron. Please don't be so dismissive of the concept just because you don't like the picture (and I am guessing the pic does this piece no justice, as George Smith rarely misses the mark).
A warning about these sofas. I have a floor-sample mohair GS sofa with cushions stuffed with hair -- boar or horse? -- and they are a royal pain in the neck. They need constant fluffing (which is not easy, since the cushions are very heavy), and even then they immediately bunch up and go flat in the middle of the sofa. I contacted GS about this, and they wrote back giving me instructions on how to fluff the cushions. I wrote back for more help, but they cut me off.
Furthermore, the sofa smelled terrible for many weeks after it was placed in my home. I believe this was the stuffing in the cushions.
I do have one of their leather chairs, which is tightly upholstered and very well-made. My issue with GS has to do solely with the sofa cushions, and the fact that GS evidently does not back up their purported guarantees. (The customer rep with whom I briefly corresponded stated "we guarantee our cushions for a long time," but then would not respond to my enquiries after that).
I will not purchase from GS again.
I like the sofa, but I can understand why a lot of people who read this site wouldn't, since it's (a) not the right thing for an understated mid-century-modern aesthetic and (b) it's really freakin' bold.
I think it would look great in a brownstone parlor, personally.
P2, I looked at some of the others, some DID look better than the one above, and some were much worse. I like things that can change and adapt. I'm a believer in textiles as accents, changing slipcovers, cushion covers, area rugs, window dressings.
I think it's primarily because I LIKE EVERYTHING. I could never roll up that sofa and put it away. I have no idea what kind of area rug would go with it, dear god, I hope it wouldn't be yet another pattern, and the patterned chair and the patterned ottoman, which would look like someone threw a pizza in a blender, made it chunky, and tossed it around the room. Too many colors. Too many competing patterns. TOOOOOO MUCH.
I can see using a more subdued pattern, like the Native American things I posted, on a smaller scale, on the dining room chairs. In the greys, browns, blacks. I can even see doing a modern chair with the Native American weaving on the back, while the seat would remain a black leather.
Let me show my ignorance yet again, all I saw on the GS site were "regular sofas" and "garish sofas". Chairs. Etc. They didn't look any different that other sofas, other than the ones covered with Kilims.
What would YOU, P2, put with that sofa? I have a couple pictures for you to show you what I mean by what I'd like.

And this room I just love:

I couldn't have all those other neat patterns in the above room if I had that sofa shown in this thread. I like the mix up of patterns, with toile, gingham (red chair), plaid, buffalo check, Native American, and, uh...what's that African pattern thing that's sort of like a scarf that has many colors? That could go in there, and might be sort of what is on the bottom of the runner on the table behind the leather sofa.
Maybe one of the ottomans or chairs, but not the giant sofa. It's too much. It's different, I just don't know how it would be used. Do you have any room pictures to show me that have that sofa in it? My opinion is subject to change without notice. ;) All I have to do is see it in a new light. Seeing it used might completely change my mind. That's all I need.
I'm in Atlanta if you want to buy mine. It's in great shape. I just need to downsize and have to have a serious neck surgery...need cash...Will sell for $5,000. It ain't in Kilim, but a Brunschwig and Fils cream coloured linen. It needs to be updated I think. They are wonderful sofas. I paid over $11,000 without the FABRIC! just give me a call if you are interested. Thanks...404-510-1247...serious inquiries only...
