NY Scavenger: Original '30s Functionalist Hall Console / Garderobe for $1100

at48726d3e42c564.90500948.jpgThis is a very interesting piece, original and individually made, and I can't describe it any better than the owner did himself:

"We found this original Bauhaus-Era hall console on a trip to Europe and couldn't resist it. It's an appealing -- and for the U.S. rare -- example of 1930s Functionalist furniture from Eastern Germany, which was the home of the Bauhaus, the Giebichstein Design School, Deutsche Werkstaetten and other progressive design centers in pre-Nazi Germany. The aesthetic of the era is reflected in this piece. It has a mix of clean lines and economic, smooth curves. It is finished in a cream ivory with light green trim."

What an interesting piece.

I would have sought out something like this had I known it existed! Instead, I'm having something like it built.

We learn something new every day.

Every time I see one of those vintage cane chairs (like the blue one listed above) on Craigslist, I cringe! Those things abound at thrift stores, usually for ten or fifteen bucks, yet people list them for 100 dollars on CL? Illusions of grandeur!

CL has made us all believe we're the curators of beautiful and valuable furniture. :)

A.Meyer, I hear you! Just goes to show another great feature of Craigslist... you can try and bargain down the owner! If it's not selling at the listed price, I'm sure he'll get the message.
