you use an angle grinder. first, a softer grit to remove whatever the original finish was, leaving the base texture. once satisfied with that look, use a rougher grit to etch in a random pattern of swirls and such to your liking. when happy, seal the whole thing with a vile chemical called incralac (recommended because it finishes perfectly clear).

work gloves are a good idea, but absolutely crucial throughout the process is ear and eye protection. the angle grinder whines at an awful pitch, and the shavings go everywhere.

looks expensive when complete, and that's always a plus.
