AARRGGHHH! I want this set! My boss and his wife have a big table and 6 of those chairs and I keep threatening to steal them all when they're on vacation. Best of luck on the sale and I'm sure they'll find a lovely new home to live in for another half a century.
my sister used to have that set--actually i found the chairs to be really badly made--the seats were the kind of cheap plywood that bends and threatens to break. --unless this person upgraded theirs if they reupholstered the seating. we broke about 3 of these chairs in regular use and none of us weigh more than 180 pounds!
unless we had the cheap mass market 'version' of something that was more upscale. perhaps this persons set is the 'original'....
Robin: the chairs certainly aren't, say, Knoll quality, but my wife and I have used them for years without incident. I haven't upgraded them myself, though it's possible the seats were replaced and recovered at some point in their lives. I was curious after reading your post and tested the chairs when I got home this evening, and didn't notice any bending/flexing on the seats.
In any case, a number of people have written to make plans to see the set in person, so I don't know if it will be available after tomorrow, but if anyone would like to see larger photos I've posted some at:
